• Place an oil drain pan below the oil filter and drain plug and unscrew the oil filter.
• Lubricate the rubber seal with clean oil and install the new filter. Tighten to 13 foot-pound torque.
• Remove drain plug in the oil pan and drain the oil. Catch the oil in the drain pan. After draining the oil install and tighten the drain plug to 18 foot-pound torque.
• Fill engine with 5W-30 weight oil. The 4.4 V8 takes 8 quarts; the 4.0 V6 takes 6 quarts. Start engine and check for leaks.
• Recheck level and top up as necessary.
• Reinstall the under engine shields / skid plates.

SAFETY first! use JACK STANDS & don't rely on the jacks by themselves to hold your vehicle up ~ i've known a neighbor and a co-worker who almost got crushed to death



have backup tools to remove your oil filter in case the previous person didn't lube the o-ring and/or over tighten the filter. i have a strap wrench or correct end-cap oil wrench for my vehicles



depending on how the oil filter is mounted, i usually add some oil right into the filter to get it pre-charged while i also lube that rubber seal/o-ring on the filter....



some say to use NEW oil drain plug gaskets before you torque it down (to specs) each plug has a torque spec; but i got away with re-using it a few times before i replace the gasket.



I spin the drain plug on by hand first to avoid cross-threading ~ then use torque wrench. you don't want this plug to loosen while you're driving on the highway or you don't want to overtighten it and have the threads on the oil pan to strip on you...



do not overfill your vehicle's oil capacity ~ the crankshaft will whip it up to foam, causing your engine bearings to starve for oil



so look up the torque spec for your drain plug, and oil capacity

The blog above lists 27 - 30 ft. lbs. torque for the drain plug. As someone in the blog stated, 30 Ft. Lbs. sounds excessive , and I agree. . You can torque the drain plug , but it's not critical to do so. Just snug the plug down. Do not over tighten the plug. It may strip out and it will distort the gasket.

Oil Pan Drain Plug
25 N·m
18 lb ft

i like to use mobil 1 oil and oil filters. drain plug torque is wrench tight done overkill it. If it's a 4 cylinder it holds 4 quarts ( with new filter). If it's a v-6 it holds 6 quarts (with new filter).

Tighten three oil pan/transmission bolts 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.) Tighten all bolts oil pan/engine block cross over 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.)

Front Differential Oil Change

1. Before changing or inspecting oil, be sure to stop engine and lift vehicle horizontally.
2. With vehicle lifted up, check leakage. If leakage exists, correct it. NOTE: Whenever vehicle is hoisted for any other service work than oil change, also be sure to check for oil leakage.
3. Remove oil filler plug (2).
4. Remove drain plug (1), and drain old oil.
5. Apply sealant to thread of drain plug (1), and tighten it to specified torque.Tightening torque Differential oil drain plug a: 23 Nm (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 ft. lbs.)
6. Pour new specified oil until oil level reaches bottom of oil filler plug hole (3) as shown in figure. NOTE:

• Hypoid gear oil must be used for differential.
• It is highly recommended to use API GL-5 80W-90 gear oil.

Differential oil specification: API GL-5 (For SAE classification, refer to viscosity chart [A] in figure.)

Differential oil capacity (Reference): 0.9 - 1.1 liters (1.9/1.6 - 2.3/1.9 US/Imp. pt.)

1. Apply sealant to thread of level / filler plug, and then tighten it to specified torque. A: Sealant 99000-31260SUZUKI Bond No.1217G Tightening torque Differential oil level / filler plug b: 23 Nm (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 ft. lbs.)

You can buy a canister wrench at the local auto parts store. You do not need to torque the oil filter on, just hand tighten, No new gasket for the drain plugs just do make sure that it is tightened properly
