We were travelling at 70-80 kph in our Mitsubishi Pajero 2000 model Fieldmaster , automatic transmission when our grandaughter accidentally kicked the transmission lever from drive to neutral. The vehicle reacted violently because of this sudden change and eventually stopped. When we started the engine we started hearing a disturbing sound not present before. It comes out everytime you step on the gas. The sound is like clacking sound. We tried to see under the car and we cant seem to trace where this sound is coming from. The vehicle is running perfectly well , in fact we were still able to bring it home ( about 300 km ) travel time. Our mechanic suspects that the sound comes from the transmission. What can be the possible problem?

What transmission oil do i need to get for my pajero 2001

Marion, Check links below for proper transmission fluid to use in your application.
Warning on the use of incorrect transmission fluids.
Info. below provided by assassin of The Mitsubishi Pajero Owners Club
Many people are using the incorrect specification in auto transmission systems requiring Dia Queen SP III transmission fluids, this is due to confusion arising from the fact that many people believe DEXRON III is suitable, IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR MITSUBISHI AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS requiring SP III.

The Transmission computer is the Achillies heel of many Mitsubishi vehicles , it sounds like your Pajero is in " limp home " mode which gives you third gear only.
See if you can borrow a replacement computer to try.
Mitsubishi scrimped on the quality of the capacitors in their computers and their failure rate is very high.

I actually have the same problem just a few mos ago with my Pajero Fieldmaster 4M40 A/T. Is your speedometer working? My speedometer sensor is intermittently working if it does not work at all, the tranny will not shift to 4th gear no matter how hard you push the gas pedal to the limit!! I replaced the speed sensor and it goes back to normal now.

I found my engine Mitsubishi pajero fieldmaster Model 2002 with rough idle when I started this morning. It took sometime before running well

unsure if this is petrol or diesel model. check basics first, air filter not clogged, sparkplugs not sooted and gaps burnt wide. if it is a GDI V6 model, thay have common fault with dirty throttle body(TB) and air mass unit, causes rough idle and gets worse over weeks until it doesnt improve.this can be easily fixed by cleaning with solvents available for air flow sensors and tb's. if engine has plastic cover, remove this to access TB
