'93 Chevy Lumina (car not van) 3.1 engine. Transmission occasionally will not disengage when coming to a stop and kills motor.Normally would be torque converter but this only happens every few weeks or so, not constantly. It will restart but you can tell it is still locked up when you put it in gear to take off. Let it sit for 5 mins or so and it will be fine till the next time it happens. Any ideas???
You nee to get your torque converter lockup solenoid replaced. If you are not very mechanically inclined you probably don't want to attempt this yourself

Almost always it's the crank sensor on a 3.8.They fail so often,I recommend changing the crank sensor at every tune up.
Otherwise the 3.8 is a great engine.
Is the fluid level OK? You can check this with the engine running and parking break set. Gain access to the eigine compartment and find the dip stick for the transmission. Please be careful of moving parts when the engine is running. Pull it out and wipe it off with the clean towel. Install the stick and remove it and see if you have a level reading. If not, fill it with the correct Dex type GM fluid that may be stamped on the dip stick. You can ask for help at an auto parts store is you need assistance on the fluid.
If this is OK or your vehicle is not equiped with a transmissing dip stick, you might want to have the transmission serviced (Fluid and filter changed) The transmission shop can also advise you about the mechanical condition of your bands in your transmission and make adjustements if needed.
"93 chevy lumina, starts good and will run for a little bit and then shuts off. or when i put it into gear it will shut off also. i have replaced the spark plugs, has new filters and used an injector cleaner. i hope you can help me figure out what is wrong with it. thanks
Drain the system. Remove the upper radiator cover and the dual cooling fans (4 bolts and an electrical connector). Disconnect the transmission cooler lines and the upper and lower hoses.. The radiator should freely pull straight up and out. Reverse the process to install the new radiator.
Does it feel like the transmission isnt disengaging and stalling the engine? If the transmission is automatic, it could be the lockout solenoid on the transmission. If it sticks, it will not disengage the transmission and cause the engine to stall when you come to a stop. Please let me know if this helps.
