Figured I would just help clarify how to change your manual transmission fluid. On the passenger side of the vehicle there are two plugs on the side of the transmission. They both have a square insert in them that is perfect for the end on a regular size socket wrench. The one on top is the "fill plug" and the one on the bottom is the "drain plug". The first step is to remove the drain plug and let all the transmission fluid drain out completely and make sure to clean the drain plug before you put it back in. (It should be magnetic to catch metal shavings that have ground up in the transmission.) When you put the drain plug back in then you can remove the "fill plug" and you will need a fluid transfer pump to pump your transmission fluid up and into your fill plug. When transmission fluid starts to come out of the fill plug then it is full and you can put the plug back in. Make sure to tighten everything, but be careful to not overtighten and look for any leaks.  Ford switched to using automatic transmission fluid in the 90's but you will want to make sure just in case to get the right kind. There are also good transmission additives that you can add to your transmission fluid which will help it. Lucas makes a pretty good one that I have had good luck with. Hope that helps. Goodluck and be sure to let me know how it goes.

There Should Be A Plug On The Side Of The Transmission. You'll See The Head Of A Bolt On The Side Toward Top, Or Middle. One On Very Bottom Is The Drain. Now Just Look For Another Similar Plug. Make Sure That Year And Model Doesn't Take Automatic Transmission Fluid. If It Doesn't Go Away. Time To Have Rebuilt. Syncro's Are Going. Good Luck

1999 escort manuel tranny wont shift into third gear all others are fine

sounds like the synchro went bad for 3rd gear. if all other gears work fine, i would suspect the synchros inside the transmission are starting to fail.

Shifts into and out of second gear hard. and has slipped a couple of times

this is a fault in the gear box velve block, there are little pistons in this velve block and they have rubber "O" rings on them if there hard or worn they leek oil past them so the gear box presher needs to be high to move them all you can do is have a re-build done on the box

My saturn grinds when I shift to 2nd and 4 gear. If I am carfull not to pull it to far to the side it wont grind as bad.Something is allowing the shift lever to go to far to the side.

CHECK THE LINKAGE AND THE SHIFTER MECHANISM ON THE THE TRANNY, SOMETIMES THEY COME LOOSE AND THERE AND EASY FIX BY TIGHTEN THEM UP. ALSO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL ON THE TRANNY TOO. THERES A REMOVABLE PLUG AND STICK YOUR FINGER IN YOU SHOULD FEEL THE OIL IF NOT THEN YOUR LOW ON OIL.

My 99 dodge ram 2500 runs great but when I shift into 4th gear it grinds a little. What can I do?

If this is a manual transmission you may want to check the tranny's synchros if they are still in good shape. try doing a double clutch if it works For automatic, it would be best to have the tranny serviced. For some cleaning by draining the oil and cleaning the solenoid works.

Grinding when in reverse and tries bogging down at lights

stop shifting so hard. your reverse gear is the same exact gear as your first, so if you shift hard and grind that gear a little then reverse will be harder to get into. you probably need your transmission rebuilt the harder your engine has to work the more its going to bogg down
