I had the same problem on the rear door of my 1998 528i and it was the door actuator that had gone bad. I had to take the rear seat out to get the door panel off. Once I had the door panel off it was not that difficult to replace the door actuator.
This could be hard to diagnose for someone that doesn't know about electronically controlled automotive systems . There are two electronic control modules involved ! (FEM) front electronic control module and the (REM) rear electronic control module . The first step would be to hook up a scan tool to look at input data to the control modules. Corrupt signals to the module ! B+ power an ground circuits problems . The wiring inside the harness from the body to driver door , opening an closing of the door breaks the wires over time . Load testing the circuit will find the problem. Ford 150 Power Door Locks Diagnosis
