My 02 saturn sw stalled out going down the road, wont restart. towed back to the house. smelled burnt wires when i lifted the hood. tried to crank, single click noise, oil light and emerg. light on, and smoke rose from somewhere behind the engine block but couldnt locate source before smoke stopped. after a few more tries caution ding began to sound rappidly, smoked a bit more then smoke stopped completely and air bag light came on. **a short time later** matthew peabody Unable to locate any wire damage and smoke no longer comes when i try to crank but the clicking noise is now rapid when i hold the key over... had wife turn the key while i was under the car, noise seems to be comming from center underneath, I assume from the starter solenoid but am not positive... Is it possible that it was the solenoid burning out that caused the smoke? would this have made the car die out while it was running?
I would be checking for the main lead to the battery /starter to ensure that it has not burnt though on the exhaust or has not worn through and been shorting out. The clicking noise would ne the solenoid moving but the current is not getting to the starter. Check the condition of the battery. Shorting of the cable will take the current away from the electrics so the engine would stop. The battery will have to be load tested to ensure that it has not been damaged.

Does it happen when the engine is hot and stops when you let the engine cool down? You may need to get under the vehicle to see where it is leaking from. If you dont have the means to do it safely then bring it to a shop, they will put it on a car lift. It could be a sending unit but it could be a head-gasket, valve-cover, or something else.

1st make sure your connections at battery and starter are clean and tight. Next pull the battery out and have a parts store check it's condition. Even though the lights and radio work, it may be too weak to crank the engine over. If the battery checks out ok, then you are probably correct, it's the starter. Check in this order though, so you don't waste $ on parts you don't need. You don't want to pull the starter out to find it was a weak battery, or a bad connection (dirty or loose connection would prevent jump start from working.)

So does the a/c still work, maybe your compressor is bad? Top off your oil and run the engine and see if you can find out where the oil came from?
