My 2005 pontiac grand prix had a battery change recently and will not pass smog now

Recently changed the battery in this car and need to get it smogged. The tech at the smog center told me that changing the bettery reset thr computer and no codes are showing. He said to put around 60 miles on it and come back, which I did and the car still is not passing the computer check. How many miles does it take to get this done?

Well it is not as simple as driving the car. It must be put in the enabling criteria to run the tests So 1st make sure the gas level in the tank is between 15%-85% and the car has sat for 12 hours outside temp and coolant temp within 10 degrees of each other start and let idle for 3-5 minutes then drive the car normal no jack rabbit starts or hard accelerations bring to 45 mph run for 2 minutes coast to 20 mph do this twice then on freeway set cruise to 58-62 mph no hills or down grades drive for 10-15 miles then idle for 2 minutes. shut car off let sit for 5 minutes then repeat the 45 mph part to end again. next day rerun cold start. then have drive cycle monitors tested if all are completed then it passes smog.

SOURCE: HCL too high, did not pass smog check.

ok well this might be a hard one . from what i can gather by the co reading and the o2 reading is that we are running fat. a couple things can cearte this one how many miles do we have on this mtr, two do we have a vacuumn leak? three is the vech going into closed loop? some how we need to get are hands on a scanner so we can look at a data, other wise you are going to be throwing parts at this vech , and thats not the way to fix your problem. the odds are that you may have some lazy o2 sensors you are close. have you tryed running the vech down the road before you go in for the test. the converter is like a hot water heater you have to bring it to operating temp before it will operate correctly. keep me informed

CA you can take the car to a referree and get a one time waiver if you have spent a minimum of $450 on repairs not including smog fees. Gives you two years to get it fixed. Smog Referee Call Center
Toll Free: 1.800.622.7733
You can also sell the car to the state for "up to" $1,000

SOURCE: I have a 1997 Ford Explorer. Check engine light

Here is a list of possible causes, hope this helps.

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on.

Possible Causes onepx.gif Setting Conditions onepx.gif onepx.gif onepx.gif onepx.gif

  • Air leaks after the MAF sensor, or leaks in the PCV system
  • Vehicle running out of fuel or engine oil dip stick not seated
  • EGR valve gasket is damaged or leaking around the gasket
  • Exhaust leaks before or near where the HO2S is mounted
  • Fuel injector(s) not supplying enough fuel
  • Fuel system not supplying enough fuel during high fuel demand conditions (e.g., the fuel pump may not supply enough fuel)
  • MAF sensor is dirty (can cause PCM to underestimate airflow)
  • Intake gasket leak

I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. It runs and drives perfect, although recently some of the warning dash lights came on. I've done routine maintenance all the time. No problems. It just rolled over...

There isn't anything at that mileage requiring any professional assistance.

You can reset everything with a hand held OBDII compliant diagnostic scanner. Most auto parts stores these days will use their own to reset it for you.

However, there are a few things that regardless of their running condition will never activate a warning light that need to be taken care of at that mileage unless you did it recently. Changing the coolant (DON'T USE DEXCOOL) re-torque the upper motor mounts and flush and refill the transmission and the supercharger reservoir.
