sometimes my 98 wont star. I find tacking the gas caps off and putting back on works sometimes and I also put the car in netural and push the car forward and this also seems to help me get the car to start. Is there a reason for this problem

Is there an anti-theft system installed? The aftermarket ones cause lots of woes. Hmm, you tried the brake pedal thing, but did you try the rear view mirror thing in conjunction with the spare tire thing? This works sometimes, I've heard.
does it have a remote start in it some times they can cause problems or you need a new ing switch and if the anti theft light comes on and the car wont start but turns over put the key in the ing switch and leave in on pos for 15 to 20 min to reset anti theft system.
CHECK YOUR MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR....I REPLACE MY STARTER STAURDAY BECAUSE MY CAR STARTED BUT WON'T STAY STARTED BROUGHT A CRANKSHAFT SENSOR AND STILL NOTHING THE WHOLE TIME MY MAF(MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR) HAD MALFUNCTION MIND YOU MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER CAME ON.
tumblers in the ignition switch and/or thew key itself is worn down and not pushing the tumblers into correct position. Only fix is to get a new switch assembley or try a fresh cut key.
Battery could be not holding a consistent charge. If not, Voltage regulator, starter motor or starter solenoid need replacing....Bad wire connections to all 3 also possible. Voltage regulator should be least expensive to try through process of elimination
the first thing to look at is the electrical system. You can start it up sometimes and not others when turning the key. So remember the key goes to the battery, starter, solenoid, distributor / rotor, coil, and spark plugs. This is just the basics. You need to check all of these first. If you haven't done a good tune up on it lately this is your chance to rule out a few things and help your mpg's by replacing your spark plugs, wires, distributor, and rotor. You should also check your key starter switch. there are some electronics there, you can check this by buying a keyless switch and wiring this out. The keyless switch will rull out the key switch.
after checking this out let me know what happens, also you may want to take the car to a auto part store and check the computer, most will do this for free, just call them and they will tell you if it does it. If they say they only do it when the engine light is on tell them it goes on and off and they will check it.
Have the crankshaft sensor replaced. This is a very common problem on this engine and it's a job best done at a shop because you need a special puller to get the crankshaft pulley off.
