Transmission won t engage, check engine light on

We think it's in some way related to the cold front recently. It was slipping into neutral for a week before hand, and now, is almost completely not wanting to work, with the new issue of the check engine light on.

ALso, we've checked the tranny fluid. It seemed fine, but a bit low, so we added some to the fill line. It also is kept up with on oil.

Run fault codes and check for TCM failure. Check the pressure in the transmission and check the condition of the transmission oil It should be bright red and if it is not then have an oil change done.

well the low cost way to go first would be to try and change the trans fluids. If the problems still remains the it may be an internal problem

I was told to change my Transmission Control Module, located on the transmission . You can get it new for under $200 but, I was advised to get it from a junk yard it's alot cheaper and its easier. I hope this helps

SOURCE: LS430 check VSC light on after check engine light on

My car (06 GS430) began giving me more frequent "Check VSC" warnings. (Code P0455 in my case. Really glad I bought that OBDII tool--resetting the codes is a snap!)

I knew that a loose gas cap could cause this, so normally I just give it a twist and it tightens. Now I found that no matter how many "clicks" I tightened the gas cap, it would not cinch down snug. The lightest turn the opposite way would open it.

I was all set to head over to CarQuest for a replacement filler cap. But I thought I'd inspect mine first just to see why it stopped holding. Upon inspection, I saw that what holds the cap in place is compression of the rubber O-ring at the back of the cap, which compresses against the filler neck. That apparently was no longer happening.

I carefully removed the O-ring from the cap--using screwdrivers to lift it over the edge of the groove it sits in. Like removing a bike tire from the rim--work your way around. Then I cut a strip of electrical tape about 10" long, and 1/4" wide. I wound this into the curved groove where the O-ring normally sits, just to build up a little thickness. Put the O-ring back in place. Done.

Now the cap tightens like it's supposed to, and thus far, it has stopped the VSC error codes. Don't know if it will fix your issue or not, Good luck.

SOURCE: Transmission or Engagement issue?

I had the same problem with my 2006 Forenza - the problem was the transmission range sensor. If you look under the hood, on the drivers side, you'll see your trans. cable connected to a round part that also has an electrical cable coming from it. That is it. Part costs $36.07 at oemsuzukiparts.com (search for Neutral safety switch in the mechanical catalog).

No error code trans not engaging with no warning

There could be many reasons relating to this problem. But inspect the cv joints at the transmission side. Inner joint of one of the cv joints may have slipped out of its position.

96 ROVER DISC. Has strong reverse - won't engage any forward gears. Fluid seems full even when warm.

Make sure the 4wd shifter is in correct position and hasn't slipped out of correct spot to get you moving forward.

Is this just the transmission, or another problem?

I guess you would need to know if the problem is transmission or engine related. Do you have a loss of engine power at 25mph, or is the transmission not shifting up, or is it slipping ?
Is the check engine light on when you are driving ?
The smoke and smell sounds like you have a trans fluid leak and it is getting onto the exhaust. But if that were true you should be low on fluid at some point in time.

Rumbling noise coming from engine compartment.

engine size, etc., I can only make educated guesses, but here goes: You stated "My car will drive, but very slow hardly moving". My first suspicion is that you don't have a transmission problem, but the car is in what Chrysler calls the 'limp-home mode'. This occurs when the computer 'sees' a problem with an engine function or sensor that is serious, but not so bad that the car won't run at all. Limp-home mode allows your car to only operate in second gear so that you won't damage it further by driving normally, but won't leave you stranded either. Is your 'check engine' or 'service engine' light on? If not, check to see that it actually works by turning the key 'on', but not starting the car. All the dash lights should be lit for about 3-5 seconds. No matter what, you need to check your transmission fluid level (on a Crysler, should be checked with the engine running and in gear, NOT park or nuetral). Safety first, make sure someone is holding the brake on - please don't ever trust a 'parking brake' for this. If the fluid level is OK and there's no 'check engine' light you need
to visit a competent transmission shop. Probabably a worn front pump, torque converter, or a hung spool valve in the valve body, none of which is generally fixable at home. If you do have a 'check engine' light on, see a regular mechanic first as there is a mechanical problem probably not related to the transmission. Good Luck!

Used 1990 Buick Riv trans slps in & outta gear; restart to engage

Not a computer issue. Transmission has problems could be filter stopping up, which also means problems.
