Misfire codes can be caused by alot of things ;bad ring in engine. bad ignition coil .bad sparkplug . bad sparkplug wires. bad map sensor (if equipt). to get a better idea you of your situation, you might want to post the make ,model ,year and mileage of vehicle and also the check engine code light codes.

Ok, if they didnt lie to you you should be getting a P303 or something like that, if you know your spark plugs are still in good shape then we can rule that out for now. These cars are notorious for having the ignition coils going bad, you can find them on ebay alot for cheap. Now to test if it it infact your ignition coil (you ignition coil is what goes ontop of the sparkplug by the way) would be to take your #3 cylinder coil and switch it with your #2 cylinder ignition coil, disconnect the battery for a little while to reset the ECU. Now drive it around for a while until your check engine light comes back on, if the code has changed to a P302 then you know its that ignition coil that has to be replaced. Now back, if you switch them and it continues to be the same cylinder then it may possibly be carbon buildup thats causing the misfire. In this case I would go to PepBoys and buy a can of SeaFoam follow the instructions on the can (very easy) and run some of that through the PCV valve. If this still fails then you may just need to change your sparkplugs. This all may sound complicated but its very easy and not too costly it dealt with now. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

I have a corolla and had #4 cylinder misfire also diagnosed at autozone. After changing the spark plugs, problem persisted, along with the same error code, so they recommended changing the spark plug wires, and that is what fixed it. I would have changed the rotor cap too, but was low on dough. Glad that was not the problem.

I have a 1999 Protege 1.6L with 93,000 miles. And a
1996 1.5L with 170,000 miles.
When my light came on, I got the EGR code read out at Advance Auto ($0). I googled 'Mazda EGR' and found this is frequently due to carbon buildup in the throttle body. It seems the carbon restricts the flow from the EGR, which then calls for a more open valve, and the error code is "excessive flow". Go figure.
Very easy to disassemble throttle body (just check to see where the EGR line is attached to the intake air path, just prior to injector assembly). Sure enough, a clump of carbon around the EGR port in the throttle body. Cleaned it up with a paper clip, Q-tip, and carburetor cleaner. Total cost < $3.
Cleared to code. No light on now, car runs fine.
If your "EGR VALVE" is bad,
you can get one cheap at the url below, and they take Pay-Pal.
Then you can install it of have it installed.

A less expensive fix is to replace the engine Coolant/Antifreeze "Temp Senser"
This will cut fuel to the injectors if not working properly.
Also replace the engine coolant "Thermostat",
when changing "Temp Senser".
You can pick up both at Auto-Zone for about $35.00.
This fixed our 1996 model. The 1999 model was fixed by replacing the
EGR Valve.
Hope this helps.

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. A technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. When the light starts flashing the computer is telling you to have the vehicle looked at now before other problems happen.
