From what you've described it sounds like you have either some teeth missing on the fly wheel (large sprocket attached to the engine) or the sprocket/gear on the starter itself, this is what engages the fly wheel and turns the motor, thus starting the car. The problem occurs when the fly wheel on the engine lines up with the gear on the starter in the area where the teeth are missing, having nothing to solidly grab to turn causes the grinding noise your hearing. When the problem first started happening chances are the second turn of the ignition key would start the car but as time goes on it's taking more and more turns of the key to start the car. It has become progressively worse due to the fact as time goes on more and more teeth are knocked off causing a bigger area available that the starter has nothing to grab onto. Chances are it's the gear on the starter which is a relatively inexpensive fix if you can purchase just the gear for the starter, if the complete starter needs replacing could be $200+ just for the starter. If it is the Fly wheel the labor cost alone just to get to the Fly Wheel to replace it I'd guestimate to be $500+.

Hope this helps, good luck

Replace the starter and the flywheel-the bad starter has not engaged the teeth on the flywheel fully and has ground some teeth off so you'll fit that space every once in a while-cheers Denny

There are a couple of relay switches in the side of the top on the driver's side. One of these is not working. Your break lights are out because of this too. You have to apply the brake to lower or raise the top.

It might be an interlock. Try rolling the car forward and back when this happens until the key turns. It doesn't take much, you should be able to do it from the drivers seat in a small car like the z3
