96 Aerostar 3.0 fuel injected.. The motor runs rich and then quits after 6-7 minutes. It acts as if it is flooded and will not restart if you hold the pedal down the motor tries to start but sputters and quits again. If you keep the RPMs up to around 3000 the motor will stay running and not stop but as soon as you try to put it in gear and the RPMs drop it quits. I cut off the exhaust pipe at the manifolds to rule out the catalytic converters. There was a rotten egg smell also before I cut the pipe. Fuel pressure is 40 psi key on and 32 -34 psi when running. I unplugged the MAF and it ran without stopping but it was still loading up at idle.

Checked the coils too. They are good even after the engine stalls.

No nests in the air box either and the intake is sucking plenty of air.

I am pretty sure that the check engine light is on due to the fact of the converter being off the vehicle but was wondering if you would be able to pull any and all diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's). We could ignore any DTC's related to the converters. Those DTC's would help narrow down the problem. Would you be able to do that and let me know what they are? It sounds as if your problem may be the oxygen sensors (O2 sensor) and due to the fact that you were having converter problems they may be loaded with fuel and they may be sending the wrong information to the vehicles computer (PCM). I believe you will get a code of P0171 which is telling your PCM that you are running lean and your PCM is giving your vehicle to much fuel (the injectors are staying open too long cause it thinks it's running lean or not getting enough fuel). I would try unplugging the O2 sensors and see if that helps. If you can get the DTC's you can rely/comment here or feel free to email me directly at [email protected] with your information and I'll be happy to help you diagnose the problem.

SOURCE: stalls when put into gear

Its possible it could be other things causing the problem, but seeing as you've checked most of the likely causes, it is most likely your Torque-Converter. The lockup clutch in your Stator-Fan located inside the Torque-Converter could be siezed, causing the car to stall.

SOURCE: 98 F150 idle drops, almost stalls

VERY COMMON ISSUE AT THE FORD DEALER I WORK AT, HERE IS WHAT i DO TO FIX IT. THIS WORKS 90% OF THE TIME, IT IS NOT A CURE ALL FOR STALL SLOW IDLE BUT A CLOSE SECOND.
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: 1997 Mustang Cobra (4V, 4.6L), rough idling, won't stay running

silly question, however did you check the air box for nests. it is not uncommon for rodents to climb in and make themselves at home. i would also say to get a maf from ford. check ALL around the engine compartment and underneath for evidence of rodents and their leavings. youll be very suprised what you may find.cheers

if your engine is a carbureted--chek the fuel filter, located in the carburetor, at the inlet line.
if fuel injected--fuel filter is located at the rear of the vehicle, on the drivers side frame rail.

Car ships replaced wires plugs o2 sencer sometimes acts like it is flooding run fine on open road.

If it acts like it is flooding while idling, but it runs fine on the road, it could be running too rich and flooding it out due to leaking injectors, bad fuel pressure regulator, or excessive fuel pressure.

I would start by replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator since it doesn't cost as much as the injectors.
Check your fuel pressure using a Fuel Pressure Check Gauge to see if the fuel pressure regulator is maintaining the proper pressure.

Vacuum is attached to the Fuel Pressure Regulator to control system pressure. When the fuel pressure regulator is not functioning properly it causes the fuel pressure to be above normal operating pressure. This condition causes excess fuel to be injected causing a rich mixture that produces black smoke.

Alfa 164 loses power on accelleration when hot. acts like its flooding and stalling. idles ok when put in neutral but once in drive, it tries to stall. on intitial start up it's fine, but within 10 minutes...

The fuel injection has an engine temperature sensor that is supposed to make the mixture very rich when cold, but then leaner as it warms up. If the thermal resistor is burned out, then it will have too much resistance all the time, and the engine will be flooded out. Use an ohmmeter to measure the temperature sensor resistance. I don't remember the exact values, but bad ones often times go 0 or infinite. And you should see it vary with temperature.

Did the old motor run? Is this a used motor? Did you hear this motor run before you installed it? Have you tried running it with the exhaust unbolted from the manifold?

I have changed everything: Spark plugs, Wires, Coil Packs, Ignition Control Module, Air Idle Control Valve, Throttle Position Sensor, Map Sensor, Cleaned out my PCV valve. My EGR Valve is in great shape so...

There are three components that will enrich the fuel mix: 1)engine coolant temperature sensor. If this is not working or the signal is interrupted by a wire breakage then the engine will run rich. The coolant sensor informs the ECU (high resistance) that the engine is cold at start up and so the ECU responds by increasing the fuel injection cycle to enrich the fuel air mix. Later on as the engine warms the resistance of the coolant sensor drops and the injection cycle is reduced by the ECU. If the sensor is faulty or has become disconnected (wire break or corrosion of the socket pins) the ECU assumes that the engine remains 'cold' and the engine runs permanently rich. 2) O2 sensor, operates completely independently of the EGR, if it is faulty and signals 'too much oxygen' then the ECU will significantly enrich the fuel mix to try and balance what it thinks is an excess of air. 3) Fuel pressure regulator. If the diaphragm has broken or there is a leak in the vacuum line this will result in higher than needed fuel pressure in the fuel rail at idle. The vacuum line acts against the spring pressure holding the valve closed. At idle, the inlet vacuum pulls back on the diaphragm reducing the fuel pressure required to open the valve. Low fuel pressure coupled with short duration injection times will mean a lean mix at idle. If the vacuum is compromised or the diaphragm damaged then the increase in rail pressure will make the fuel mix very rich to point of flooding the engine

95 Bonneville won't start when hot

Yes I know, but If you hold the accelerator pedal to the floor on a fuel injected car, the Throttle position sensor will tell the computer to enter clear flood mode. Then the computer will shut off the fuel injectors while you have the pedal to the floor. If it is flooded, you should be able to get it started in clear flood.
