I have a 97 Saturn SL manual transmission. For a fewdays now, Ive been having trouble shifiting gears. I push the clutch, no problems, start to shift gears & getting it to go from gear to gear is so hard to do, it hurts my hand & arm.
Someone please help! Ive got to keep this car running, as I cant afford a new one, & I have NO clue what the problem is!!
Thank you!

    Not that Ive noticed really...
This is the 1st manual transmission vehicle Ive ever owned, & I honestly dont know much about it...
But, the clutch seems to be okay as far as I know...

Im going to try to get it checked this week... Just wanted to see if anyone had an idea what it could be, thinking maybe could get a friend to fix it for me...

I drove it today & I was able to shift, just had to put some muscle into shifting the gears LOL..

Could it be maybe something like needing some kind of fluid? (I dont even know of manual cars have any different things like that...)

Im willing to bet that youre right then! I have no clue about cars!
Is it expensive to fix a shifter linkage?
Should I stop driving it until I get it fixed? Or would it be okay to drive it for a few days?

Well sounds like maybe the shift rail is bent, this will require the transmission to be removed and repaired, u will need a professional to check this for, the trans is a very expensive repair, so guessing is not a good idea, it can be some other problem, we are really just giving general info from here, hard to diagnose a problem we can't see 1st hand..

have the fluid level checked, but if it were low the trans would have a very loud whining noise in it from dry bearings, no i am sure it is the shifter linkage or the shift rails that are your problem, 35 years of doing this for a living tells me this..

there is no way to know the cost until a GM or Saturn technicain looks at the problem.

Add some ATF in the dipstick behind the battery, below the master brake cylinder. The dipstick is weird and hard to find. It has a red flip cap instead of a pull ring. I know this is too late to help the poster, but others are looking for this. (Like myself.) Question? kurt1431 at comcast dot net.

1995 Saturn SL1 Manual Transmission

Sounds like the friction surface of the clutch disc is slipping. You would have to install a new clutch (clutch disc, pressure plate, and clutch release bearing), and have the flywheel surface cut and polished back to perfect smooth by a shop.
Manual transmission gears don't slip like automatics. And lack of fluid in the transaxle or the hydraulic clutch system won't cause this either.

I have a 97 saturn sl that has 17" rims on it.I am

Figure out what it is, an SL1 being SOHC or an SL2 being DOHC. If it is a SOHC then it came with 14 inch rims and if it is a DOHC then it came with 15 inch rims. Once you know what it is then call around to local junkyards, or auto recylers if it sounds better, and tell them you need 4 rims of the right size. Rims usually cost about 20 bucks apiece used and any Saturn rim 91-20 will fit the car, with the proviso that they must be the right rim, being 14 inch or 15 inch. If you put the wrong size on, your speedometer and odometer will be way off and your transmission life with be greatly reduced. Then get yourself some regular tires to fit the rims and sell those stupid rims on craigslist to some dumb kid.

What's the difference bteween a 99' saturn sl and a saturn sl1? My 99' saturn sl wont go in reverse, what might be wrong with it?

The SL2 is a DOHC 1.9L and the SL1 is a SOHC 1.9L. They have different transmissions, the DOHC uses a 15 inch wheel while the SOHC has a 14 inch wheel. So when you are shopping around for another transmission you must get one from the same type of engine. Saturn auto transmissions seem to be problematic, I stuck with the manual trannys and had very good luck.

Does a saturn sl1 2001 have a single or double transmission?

An SL1 has a single overhead camshaft, SOHC, engine. It has but one transmission. If it has a clutch pedal next to the brake pedal, it is a manual shift/transmission, if there is only a brake pedal, then it is an automatic transmission.
