My 1999 2lt. petrol Galant has been losing power until the point where it is currently almost completely gutless. It wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Going up hills is touch and go at best, 25mph and down into 2nd gear.
The engine is revving ok, but there is just no poke.
Doesn't feel like a slippy clutch either.
Probably some engine management system problem or dodgy sensor somewhere, but I'd appreciate any useful guidance.
Cheers.
Have new update on this ,turns out that my balancing belt broke off and was slapping on the timing belt causing it to skip a couple of teeth so I bought new timing belt stuff and put it on the way it should go and all lines marking and with the falling method on the oil sprocket and my car was running as good as new.
The pump is under the back seat it is a pain to get the locking ring of the fuel pump, I have the same problem as you and still have it I only replaced the filter, spark plugs, wires, ignition coils, battery, intake, ect, and when I rev it to the max it blows out that means it hits 7000rpms and automatically powers down, doesnt rev limit like all the other galants do
Firstly, is this a Gdi engine? if the engine revs ok when on park and neutral, but loses power when on a gear while driving, most likely your GDi pump is malfunctioning. i experienced this problem twice already and the pump was the problem on both occasions. the car works fine and malfunctions sometimes until the pump stops working and the car can hardly drive and then it stops starting altogether. the pump is fairly easy to replace.

Problem solved!
The back box of the exhaust system had collapsed internally and was choking the engine.
If the exhaust gases can't get out, the fresh charge of fuel / air can't get in, I guess.
