Look where the wiring harness comes through the rear passenger compartment. Theres usually a junction that splits off then goes to the back tail lights, I beleive there is also a ground wire somewhere in the same vicinity. Sounds like theres a short in the harness at that junction or the ground is maybe loose or rusted and not making contact.

SOURCE: 2001 ford explorer sport trac

Just found the answer on another site. Sure enough went out removed the 3 philips head screws in the steering column opened it up and walla a wire connection had pulled itself free. When my son uses my truck he always uses the tilt steering, when I get in I have to readjust it. because of this the wire connection pulled itself out. I simply pushed it back in an blinker and brake light are now working. My husband is now trying to figure a way to secure the wire connection so it doesn't pull itself out again. Hope this helps others, either by saving the cost of a dealership or machanic or from getting rear ended.

Hi Mary ANN , need some clarification ,the fuse's for all these thing's you have listed , the tail lights, hazard, headlights, blinkers, cruise, brake lights, coolant fans are good ? If good what makes you think you have a short ? Explain ! Are these thing's not working ? That wouldn't mean you have a short . You could have a bad ignition switch !

98 Chevy Tahoe, drivers side rear tail light assembly wont work, brake / turn signal. Replaced entire assembly, it worked for about 3 days then stopped working again. I need to get this fixed before I get...

I've got the same problem on 98 GMC Sierra.

I'm an electrical engineer, I checked the electrical diagrams and verified that there is no problem in the rear lamp assembly or wiring. With the light assembly unplugged, I can actually watch the blinker and brake signals operate with a voltmeter. The Tail light works OK.

It simply won't provide enough current to light the bulbs.

I'm afraid that it's melted one of a pair of normally closed contacts inside the blinker switch that feed the brake and turn separately on each side.

Rear tail lights not working

If both tail lights are not working it is likely to be a fuse or bad connection under the hood or a connector at the back see if you can trace the wires to a connector and see if it is dirlty or corroded.

99 Chevy Tahoe... Rear turn signals, brake lights, and hazards

I had this problem, and to be honest, it happened to the left side about a week later...it's the board that the bulbs plug into...it's a very common problem with this model. So popular that you can normally get the socket board off the shelf at a parts store! it's extremely simple to replace, and I replaced all the bulbs at the same time!

99 mercury mystide had rear running light broken

If the driver's side tail light is working, it's not a fuse. Use a test light to check for power at the bulb holder. One terminal will be for tail light, the other for brake/turn light. If the is constant power for tail light, replace bulb. If no power, trace wiring from bulb holder to driver's side junction. Probable broken wire between the two tail lights.
