I have 1996 Mazda MPV 4WD mini van. After starting it the 4wd dash light blinks for about 10 secs then goes off and a "beep" goes off 8 times then stops. Check engine light stays on and Autozone coded it as P1601 indication communication error with the TCM. Brake Max said the TCM has failed and and isn't telling the trans what mode it's in, (2wd or 4wd). Luckily it failed while in 2wd says the mechanic. Also says the TCM is obselete but they can get one used for $475 and replace mine for an additional $375 as it is hard to get to/service. Anyone know where this part is located in the vehicle and if the repair estimates are reasonable? Van has 113,000 miles and is in great condition, always garaged.

My 2WD 1996 Mazda MPV transmission dipstick is a black stick, from out side, it look about a foot long from bottom to top with a black handle that is about 2 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. It is locate between the battery and the engine, actually, the top of it is a little bit lower than the bottom of the battery and closer to the front of the engine where the belts are.

I have one of these vans you can put it in 4x4 anytime while driving or stopped or taken out of 4x4. the diff lock does not have to be on to have 4x4 .this **** locks in the rear diff,giving you all 4 wheels,this diff **** should be pushed when stopped,and taken out when stopped,it is always taken out before the 4x4 is . ps the 4x4 light on the dash should not be blinking if it is your acuator is stuck it can be freed up for 30.00

Sounds like the front drive axles are worn.My 89 MPV had the same "clicling" noise with an occasional clunk.The reason you feel it more in 4wd mode is because power is now being transfered thru the worn axles. I replaced both sides for approx $375(Axles rebuilt were 130 for drivers side and 110 for passenger side the rest was labor)
