I have a 2004 gmc sierra truck. after driving it for about 45 miles or so and it sits for awhile and then is started a cloud of blackish purple color smoke appears from the exhaust and the engine starts ticking. the ticking continues sometimes for up to 20 mins until its back to normal. when we use it in the city for short trips the noise and smoke do not happen. any ideas? we did get the exhaust manifold bolts replaced because some were broken and we thought the problem we fixed but the sound is still happening.

SOURCE: will start in the am,

there would be salt formation in the radiator which would turn the engine off and also may be the spark plug would be weak so try to clean the radiator and change the spark plug also.

NO , just replace the the gasket and exhaust bolt, just make sure you buy a stainless bolt, there not much more but they will out last the truck. and might as well replace the drive's side too since your working on it. Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: Truck makes clicking noise just after starting up!

The smoke if it's white and goes away is just condensation in the exhaust system evaporating and the clicking noise could be the famous GM Piston slap. You can take it to the GM Dealer, there is an upgrade ECM program to help eliminate the piston slap noise when the engine is cold. You can also try adding some Lucas engine treatment to your engine oil to help with the piston slap problem. Start with that and hope it's not overdue for an oil change or low oil level in the engine.

SOURCE: Plinking noise under GMC Sierra

Your muffler has a dent or slight imperfection in it. Whenever it heats up, is expands and pops the dent one direction, and once it cools enough, it pops back. This is completely harmless, and if you can live with the sound, won't hurt anything. (my '01 does it too)

After sitting in garage unused for 2 weeks 2008 gmc sierra 2wd starts fine, but ABS light stays on, in D clunks into gear then check engine light came on. 18000 miles. had no issues when parked

That is really low mileage for issues but clunking into gear is a symptom of a bad universal joint on your drive shaft. Does it clunk in D and R?

Where is the fuel filter located in a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500?

Under the truck, on drivers side, between fuel tank and engine compartment, sort of under where the drives sit, against the frame.

The cruise does not work first thing in the morning or after the truck sits for awhile. after you drive 15 to 20 miles it begins to work, sometimes.

Check your system. take apart your dash an chech if all of the wires are secure. if evoryting looks fine this means it is a manufacturing defect):

1997 GMC Sierra 1500 6.5 diesel runs for awhile then stalls

These have a problem with a injection pump control. It is a black box on the drivers side of the Injection pump. Either that or maybe a lift pump. When it dies, after it sits a while does it start right back up?

2004 GMC Sierra 1500 blows a cloud of smoke only at startup

If it's the org. engine it will has over 60,000 miles on it.
It's normal to has the valve stem seal/oil seal on the head to leak oil into the cyclinder.

The smoke you see is the motor oil drop from the valve stem seals.

It land on the top of the cyclinders and it create black smoke at start up.

The inexpensive fix is to start using high mileage oil with seal conditioner.
This will help soften the rubber seals and help reduce internal oil leak.

The correct fix is to wait until it's time for a head gasket replacement and let the professional service the head.

Complete head service is the only method to stop this internal oil drip problem.

1997 gmc sierra shuts off while driving

Had same problem with a Yukon. Turned out to be a bad fuel pump (Won't show codes.) When cold ran fine, heated up, no pressure. Would start after sitting for about 1/2 hour. When engine dies on you check for fuel pressure under the hood.
