we just got my GF a 1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo, and during the 1st week while she was driving it had no issues then all of a sudden the interior lights will flicker and sometimes stay on while driving, and besides the dash lights not working, but i recently changed the bulbs and now 2 of the dash lights r working after hitting top of dash like the fonze...lol and i wigglied the dimmer slider swtich and the other dash lights came on except for the rpm, speedo, amp and oil area of the dash display, which im thinking i need to take all off again and use my electrical spray cleaner on all connectors and thinking of using a pencil eraser on all metal to metal contacts for the dash light plugs to see if that would work instead of my hitting the top of dash again?...lol and still when i turn on all headlights during the daytime the interior lights doesnt flicker while im driving her jeep it only does it when we driving at night

1996 jeep grand cherokee no automatic interior lights

1. If you have the light switch in the wrong mode the lights will not operate when you open the door.

2. If the interior lights do not operate at all (ie you cannot switch them on and off manually)then you need to check the fuse for the interior lights.

3. When set to the correct mode, the interior lights will operate from a door operated switch so if the switch has failed the lights will either stay on or not operate at all when you open and close the door. Eventually these door switches fail with repeated use and need to be replaced. (Consider how many times the small door switch has been operated since 1996).

Try gently tapping the starter motor with a hammer or bar. There may be a bad contact in the sollenoid or the starter motor brushes worn to their limit. Tapping may give you a tempory fix if the problem lies in the starter motor.
