automatic trans right??? and for sure had manual box too. a/t or m/t??????????????

check tranny linkage first, or shift cables.
and fluid levels.? good?, hot engine idle in park?

and scan the PCM
but most times reverse failing is bad news.
aside from cable shifters failing.
the cables are 20 years old.
uses how many times, shifted now. gee huge.
and cables do fail for sure RUST there happens.

the service manual tells how to check the shifter
in PRNDL, to be sure it shifts into tranny selector detents properly. , even make sure Park works can car not be able to be pushed brakes off.

Neutral safety switch is no longer in sync with shifter. The switch is next to the base of the shifter on driver's side. Remove the console and remove the switch. Check for damage. If no damage, test switch by moving up and back with car running and foot on brake. Also check the shifter interface to the switch. Will it engage the switch and move it properly? If yes, put switch and shifter in park position and reattach switch. Test for proper operation before replacing console.

could be a selector failure. easiest to check first or internall drama with torqu converter ,one way clutch or other. these will require r@r n overhaul

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities.

indications from your description is that the shifter ( cable or mechanical ) is loose or out of adjustment and is jamming on the light position switch
If it cable , then have it checked out as with a 1997 model , there is a good chance that the cable is fraying or jamming and is the cause of the problems
if it is all mechanical linkage , then check for worn out bushes or rubber sections
you state that when gear it drives perfectly so by that statement , there is no transmission problems just selecting problems

The gear range switch on the back of the transmission is either bad or out of adjustment. To adjust, try removing the switch and put it in the neutral position (it should click into this spot). Then put the transmission in neutral and reinstall the switch being careful not to let the switch turn at all during re-install. There is a few degrees of adjustment available by turning the switch in either direction as well if it is still off. The car should only start in park or neutral and the reverse lights should only come on when in reverse.

I'm thinking this is an interior problem. Dirt ETC.. can build up around the shifter, you can pop the panel below the shifter up with a screwdriver. Clean this panel up and lube up the linkage below and you should be good to go.

Locate a repair manual at your library or your local auto parts store."chiltons or haynes repair manuals".They may have one already open and available without having to purchase one. Perhaps you can research online and find a site that has the information your requesting.
