Some car parts places like AutoZone will plug in a diagnostic tool called an ODB2 and can tell you the error code.
then 'maybe' they will tell you what that means. and if you get a nice person they will reset it although they are not supposed to.
Any rate then google the diagnostic code for solutions.
I called Autozone and they told me they can't check it for free in California anymore. Took it to someone else and they said "minute evaporation leak". Any suggestions? HELP!
Also you can buy an inexpensive ODB2 scanner to test and reset the code while you are searching for the leak.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

Turn the key on, engine off, slowly depress the accelerator pedal to the floor three times within ten seconds. Turn the key off. Turn the key on and start the vehicle. If it is still on repeat the process.

Need to use a code reader to read and reset check engine light.
SOURCE: 2008 dodge nitro change oil light how to turn off ...
Directions are in the book, but you would put the key in and turn it all the way, just don't start engine. Pump gas pedal all the way to the floor 3 times slowly, but it has to be with 10 seconds. Turn key off and when you start again, oil changed chime and warning should not be on. If it is, try again.

its emissions, go to an auto part store and they should have an obd2 reader and it will scan the emissions system and tell you what is wrong. more than likely an o2 sensor. also check the gas cap and make sure its on good that will make it come on too.
