thank you Thomas for your solution my question. i know nothing about cars and the codes seem to all intertwine with eachother so it is hard to narrow down what the exacf problem may be. when my cobalt first started to stall i took it to autozone and the first code readings had to do with spark plugs, wires (coils), o2 sensor, and fuel injectors so i had the throttle body cleaned with seafoam, sparks n coils replaced. the car ran fine for about two days then the check engine light came back on and the car began doing the same thing. when i went back to autozone and then the codes read p0171 p0102 p0113

ok i replaced the o2 sensor on 2009 cobalt and took the car ob thr highway. i was gone for about an hour and car drove fine and coolant temo stayed in the 180's which is

normal temp for my car but now the temp is fluctuating in stop and go traffic. i have read that it could be coolant sensor or thermostat but car isnt throwing a code for that. i have had the plugs and coils done, cleaned out the throttle body and intake and half assed seafoamed the car. i don't know what this could be and i know nothing about cars. PLEASE HELPPPPPPP!!!!! Tired of spending money trying to pinpoint what could be wrong and i don't have money to take it to dealers for diagnostics.

Hi CHRISTINE,THE COOLANT TEMP. SENSOR IS 21.00 AT AUTOZONE,MAY OR NOT BE IT,SENSOR DOESN'T GO OFF WHEN BAD.tRY IT,IT'S LOCATED NEAR THERMOSTAT COVER.

  • Christine Campbell Oct 28, 2013

OK I will atleast try it since it is only $21. Also was reading through codes and realized that the guy from autozone (who read the codes) told me I needed upstream o2 sensor when code p0171 is downstream o2 sensor. Question....can faulty sensor throw false codes for other things

  • Thomas Perkins
    Thomas Perkins Oct 28, 2013

Yes,Sometimes a code will have different faults than what it really is.dID YOU REPLACE THE WRONG SENSOR,WHEN SENSOR IS BAD,YOU WILL NOT HAVE GOOD POWER.

  • Christine Campbell Oct 29, 2013

Guy told me o needed upstream when I needed downstream o2 sensor. So I had upstream replaced. I will have downstream replaced this weekend but I'm having this coolant temp surge when I am in stop and go traffic and I guess as a safety mechanism the car cuts off before it overheard but temp is normal on highway.....any thoughts????

When are you do for an oil change,if you take to dealer for oil change, they will scan your vehicle and tell what is wrong for free and how much to repair, since you took for oil change, and you think you can repair, you can tell them you will get back with them when your money is right and now you will know for sure what is wrong and fix,I take my Toyota to dealer for oil changes and they show me the diagnosis report.

Wouldn't hurt to try, thanks again Thomas

SOURCE: Check engine light comes on. p0171 and p0351 codes found

From Lusty Kid:

I know the economy is bad, but change all of the plugs. Check your PCV Valve hose, 150 rottens them out allowing air to be sucked in, thus all kinds of codes.

Depending on mileage. Dismount the EGR valve and clean passages. If you are really good dismount the throtle position sensor body and clean out passages with Choke Cleaner., dismount where the EGR valves connects to the engine, clean out passages. Also check the hose thats behind this mounting to ensure is not clogged. If clogged clean it out. If not replace it. Is about 1.5 ft. long, connects to the PCV Valve Hose.

When is the last time you change your harness. Can't remember??? Replace it. Good Luck

SOURCE: 1996 s10 2.2 engine starts but idles rough and will not rev up.

Hi! You must be frustrated by now! your code is marking that the O2 sensor is bad in bank 1. Did you replace the O2 sensor that is located  before the catalytic converter?  The S10 has an O2 sensor specially made for that cat. its about 30$ That would explain for your blackened spark plugs; your pc on the car is asking for more fuel. GOOD LUCK!!

SOURCE: 2005 chevy cobalt 2.2 is running rough (putting)

Number three cylinder is miss fire,it does not mean it is the coil, although it could be,remove the coil, and boot, and spark plug, inspect them to see if the plug,or boot look bad, replace the spark plug, and if the boot is burned or distorted, replace it,a fuel injector can cause a miss fire also, but change the spark plug and see if this solves the problem,if not replace the coil,if it is a dead miss, then the coil might be bad,as for the water in the fuel ,the cap is missing,,and 5 dollars worth of HEET will not hurt, also, fuel from the fuel station, can have water in it.It happens a lot.

Possible Service Engine Soon Light, Engine Stalling, or Hard Starting

Engine, May 18, 2009

RepairPal Expert Overview:
The RTV seal on the fuel system control modules may allow water to enter into the module. Water in the module can cause a short, which may cause hard starting, a crank-no start condition, or stalling, and the Service Engine Soon light may come on. If the engine stalls unexpectedly, there is an increased risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the fuel system control module free of charge. The recall began on May 18, 2009. The GM recall number is 08411.

Try new spark plugs and wires, or an overall tuneup. This is a fairly new vehicle, shouldn't be to much wrong with it, unless it just haven't been taken care of.
