Intermittent charging Sometimes it charges and sometimes it doesn't. The alternator passed bench tests at Autozone, I replaced the pigtail connector and checked fusible bus link and fired a blank. The charging indicator light doesn't seem to match the status of the alternator. The light is sometimes on when there is 14.3V output from the alternator and sometimes it is off when there is only 10V reading. What could be the problem?

Sounds as if the voltage regulator is going bad. Most are now located on or inside the alternator itself. Passing the test with the problem being intermittent makes a case for the regulator. I suggest getting a regulator, or replace the alternator with a friends if you have one whose model will fit.

SOURCE: Charging Light On After Replacing Alternator/Battery1999Windstar

Hi, I can't tell you exactly what is wrong because there is too much involved at this point, what with 2 shops working with it, but I can give you some advise on what else to check. On the alternators and the wiring that supports them a small volt charge is taken off one of the slip rings, where the brushes ride, for the purpose of turning out the light. As I remember, this is a yellow wire that runs back to the dash.

To the alternator, it would be one of the wires that plug into the side of the alternator case.

SOURCE: i own a 2006 3.0 v6 ford escape this past few

How is the alternator belt? There might be a loose connection at the battery, alternator, ground cable. Without a lot of detail, there are 1 way diodes in alternators, when the diodes go bad, the current will go the way it's not to, when this happens, it powers the light in the dash. Try wiggling the connectors, maybe that would make the light come on, if there is a bad connection.

Testimonial: "interesting suggestions somehow those folks at ford didn't bother to tell me. But sir any suggestions where i can bring my escape?"

Battery light comes on after about 5 min... sometimes cycles on and off... eventually stays on and batteries discharge and truck goes dead. This issue existed before I did any work on it

Is the alternator charging on the vehicle? It might be new and work on the bench, but if it is not getting the power it needs to make power on the vehicle then it will not charge. With the vehicle running you should have around 13.5v at the battery at idle. If the alternator is not replacing the power being used out of the battery it will act exactly like you have described.

Battery not charging

Most causes are: bad connection at battery post, corrosion inside connectors where they meet the battery posts. Bad ground connection where negative cable bolts to engine and frame. Bad alternator , take it to another auto parts store or alternator repair shop and have them test it, sort of like having a second doctor's opinion. I'd say the alternator is bad if it has a lot of miles /age on it.

88 Izusu Trooper II with 274000 miles Battery warning light comes on when first starting and running- after driving awhile, it goes off and starts charging- also during the warning period- the blower

Sounds like your battery isn't charging properly, first thing to check, is your alternator belt slipping, is it tight enough, if so does it need replacing?

Next the battery, if its over 2 years old it could be on its way out. Does it hold its charge?

Finally, Alternator, is it still providing a charge for the battery? Are all electrical connections good and clean?

1991 honda accord will not charge alternator test good

1st check and make sure you have a good ground on the battery. Check the battery. Make sure it passes a load test. It is possible that the battery is not holding a charge. Make sure all alternator connections are connected.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee intermittent voltage drop, lose electric

I wont list this as a solution, but it seems that working in the area of the alt may have moved around some wiring...the alt may be OK but perhaps an adjacent wire (maybe a ground) is not well connected. Also check crimped on wire loops on alt connectors..they like to corrode at the crimp where it crushes on the actual wire.
