Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

1997 golf cl 1.8 L Starts ok then dies. ok above 1900 rpm

1997 golf cl 1.8 L Starts then stops. If you rev it past 1900 rpm then it will run fine and wont stop. It will not run for very long at idle but when it does, it runs ok.

I started it cold today and ran fine for 2 minutes then stopped. I could only start it after that by priming it but could not get it to run for longer than the fuel I primed it with.

I have checked for vacuum leaks, fitted a new coil pack and tested the fuel pump relay.

Any ideas?

Sounds like censor issues. Have diagnostics run on the vehicle to find the culprit.

Engine jerks at 1900 rpm

It sounds like either a fuel restriction or clogged CAT. What have you run for tests so far. Were any repairs or maintenance performed prior to this issue.

What would cause car not to rev. up when press on the gas

Most newer model cars have a computer program that will not allow a car to be revved up past a set rpm while in park or neutral to protect the engine from damage. If it runs fine during normal driving operations then it is best to leave it alone.

Won't start, engine wont rev above 2000rpm

Have the alternator tested. You are providing a low charge to the battery when you jump it and when taking it above 2K RPM requires more amperage resulting in the engine dying and the rough idle

Idle fluctuates

Its could be a few things. Most likely cause is you IAC (Idle air control valve) If this valve gets clogged up with carbon it will cause a idle surge on cold starts like you are describing.

Next your FITV (fast idle thermal valve). When the hot wax inside of this valve starts to wear it will cause a idle surge on cold starts.
