What does the anti lock light on the dash mean?

The abs light means your anti-lock brake system has detected a fault and probably isn't working. Your check engine light probably came on at the same time. Get a mechanic or someone with a car computer code reader to connect to the diagnostic port under the dash and read off the error codes to diagnose your problem better.

Hi Missy , There are a number of thing's that can cause this . Fuel system problems , ignition system problems , the PCM - powertrain control module , the PCM is the engine computer ! There are multiple sensors on this vehicle as with all cars for the 80's on . From 1996 on they have more electronic modules then before , Anti-theft systems , air bags, anti - lock brakes etc.
Does you car have any lights light on the dash ? check engine ? Security ?. When you first turn on your key the dash lights light up an after 7 seconds the lights should go out , Do they ? You should check for DTC's - diagnostic trouble codes . That means hooking your car up to a scan tool . If it starts an shuts back off right away I would think a anti-theft system problem . If the anti-theft thinks it being stolen it disables the fuel injection in some cases !

Check for OBD Codes & diagnose them

It means your anti-lock braking system is not working properly. All Impalas this year come with ABS, the light simply means it is not functioning properly.

If it is a red flashing light that light belongs to the anti theft system, if the car is running normally there is nothing to worry about

It means the traction control system has been disabled. It can be done manually by pressing the switch on the dash or by an onboard computer (meaning there is a problem). If you can't press the button to get the light off, then get it scanned. Traction control system works with the anti-lock braking system and the engine to help the driver control the vehicle in the event it should be slipping or skidding. It will activate the anti-lock brakes, help reduce steering pressure to better steer and can sometimes cut out engine cylinders to reduce the power going to the wheels to better control in the skid.

Either drive it until it has gone thru several drive cycles,could take days, or use a code reader or scanner,and see if that works

these car have problem with abs pump leaking, check to see if you have enough brake fluid. the pump is on the left side front of engine compartment
