I have a 1998 Chevy silverado that starts off and on sometimes if I let it sit for a couple of hours it wont start other times i have to let it sit overnight but that doesnt nessarily mean it will start I had the fuel pump and filter replaced as well as having the disrtibutor cap, spark plug wires and spark plugs replaced but this did not resolve the problem
Could be your camshaft sensor.
I would check a few things:
Load test the battery. If its got any age on it at all, this could be the culprit.
Test the starter.
Check for loose connections at the distributor cap. Make sure the rotor in the cap is seated and that the cap is properly seated.
Check for loose connections on the battery, the starter and make sure you have fuel pressure on the injector rails (key on, detent the shrader valve .. you should get fuel).
SOURCE: adjust timing on 1998 GMC K2500 pick up 5.7 liter
It has to be done with a scanner. You can adjust this distributor, but there are no timing marks to watch as you move it. There is a timing mark on the balancer and on the timing cover for referencing Top Dead Center #1 cylinder only, but it is only used for dropping the distributor in to get the engine up and running. A scanner is needed to properly adjust the timing. Connect the scanner and look for a data parameter labeled ‘cam offset’ or possibly ‘cam ******.’ It will be listed in degrees. Start the engine, and bring it up to 1500 rpm. Note the reading. If the timing specification is not within plus or minus two degrees of zero, you need to move the distributor. You can move the distributor with the engine running but the timing will not change. After you move the distributor, the ignition has to be cycled off to let the computer learn the new timing spec. Restart the engine, bring it up to 1500 rpm and see what the new spec is. You must repeat this procedure until you get the timing into the specification as mentioned above. Once you have it set to spec, the code should clear.

1999 Yukon Start Issue - I have replaced the octopuse, battery, fuel filter, fuel pump, still having problems starting in cold weather, sometimes after a heavy rain.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Check for a bad distributor cap and or rotor..........a bad cap and or rotor can caues firing (cross fire)across the terminals and introduce spark to the wrong cylinders at the wrong time.......
hope this helps.....good luck!

Yes it does crank and has plenty of spark just doesnt fire
umm not sure I cant smell fuel and I sprayed ether in to the air filter cxanister and still dint get it to fire
check for fuel pressure, and injector circuit voltage.
is there fuel pressure when it does this?
does it crank and not start, does not crank?
this sounds like an alternator issue. get it checked out for free in your local advanced autoparts, or which ever.
