My car runs fine for the most part. sometimes when i stop for a light or something it dies on me. i can crank it up in the yard and it will idle fine. if i give it gas and let off then it tries to idle around 700 rpm and it chokes off. this is the same problem i get when im stopping.

Most likely a vacuum leak , here are another few things to check... distributer cap and rotor ( all in one pk specific to your car ) should be changed once a year , spark plug wires ( the wires coming from your distributor to your spark plug). Should be changed once every 6 months . Your spark plug ( a decent brand ) also should be changed once every 6 months . Fuel filter once every year .. And air breather checked and or changed once per year... anyone of these things if ignored will cause problems with stalling when coming to an idle.. Also I find a lot of people have partially failed thermostat which is partly open , sticking or failed closed have major stalling problems.. Good news is non of that stuff is terribly expensive and if your half way handy then YouTube it and do it yourself. Ps. Always buy fail open thermostat. I believe the brand is called failsafe. More cars hit the wreckers because of fail closed then you can shake a stick at.

If it's a automatic it could have a developing trans problem which the clutches getting sticky, or a sensor feeding the wrong info. On the engine there is a idle control system that may be sticky or gummed up with carbon. Could be a bad vacuum break booster that let's in air while braking, leaning out the fuel air raito beyond the computers ability to adjust for. Minding safety, try going into n before you stop and see if the stalls get better, also idle in the yard with it in drive, with and without the brake pedal applied.

SOURCE: 1999 Grand Am 3.4litre idle problems. Starts rough

it sounds like you have a injector leaking down into one of your cylinders so it is flooding out a cylinder thus runs rough and long cranks.

SOURCE: rough idle then stalls

Vacume leak or bad idle motor. With the car in park and running with the hood open listen for leaks moving your hand around the different hoses looking for a change in the sounds that you hear. The idel motor also makes the car idel up to 1500 RPM or so right at start-up then idel down, If it doesn;t the idel motor is likly. Check engine light is on when running? Test for codes, Follow code test charts don't skip any steps!.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

2002 Jetta 1.8t cuts offs sporadically

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

It is one of 2 things fuel pump or Crank Shaft Position Sensor. Best bet would be the Crank Shaft Sensor, and what that does is tell the computer where the crank is and when to fire the right plug at the right time
