Is your Impala a 2000, 2001, or 2002? This seems to be a common problem in those model years...much like its predecessor the GM VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System). While the VATS had a permanent (albeit unapproved) solution, no suck workaround appears to be available for the Passlock system. Some websites offer a correction "module" that looks to be a hit-or-miss solution. I did find the following procedure on a forum, and it seems to be reliable. Here goes:
If your car has been sitting while you were at work or home or in the store, and you are coming out to leave, follow steps 1-6.

If you just had the SECURITY SYSTEM lock you out of the ignition system, you will have to wait the 10 minutes for it to reset and allow the ignition control module to interact with the system. Once the 10 minutes have passed from the ACTIVE SECURITY STATUS, follow steps 1-6. Do not try to shortcut this as it wont work.

If it is raining, you can close your door, just not all the way. Close it all the way and open the door latch without pushing the door open. This will keep you dry.

+++++STEPS+++++ 1.) OPEN YOUR DRIVERS DOOR AND SIT DOWN. 2.) PLACE KEY IN IGNITION, WAIT FOR CHIME. (3 seconds is what I usually wait) 3.) TURN IGNITION 1 CLICK RIGHT (TO THE ACC POSITION) AND STOP! Do not continue to ON and START yet. WAIT ATLEAST 5 SECONDS 4.) AFTER 5 seconds has passed, TURN KEY TO ON and STOP, DO NOT CONTINUE TO START YET! 5.) WAIT AND WATCH. With your drivers door open, here is what you will see and hear = Your notification will signal DOOR ADJAR, then the BATTERY light, then the SECURITY light, during which you will hear the chime sound as if you just started the car. 6.) AFTER YOU SEE THE SECURITY light switch back to DOOR ADJAR or Battery, and after the CHIME has stopped, you can turn the key to start and voila!

It has worked every time for me and 5 of my friends. This whole process takes about 20-30 seconds, but it sure as hell beats 30 minutes, as GM refuses to compensate my time lost to their vehicle\'s design flaws.

RECAP: 1.) Open driver door, sit down 2.) Insert key in ignition, wait for chime 3.) Once chime starts wait 3 seconds 4.) Turn key to ACC position WAIT atleast 5 seconds 5.) After 5 seconds turn key to the ON postion and wait for the security light to switch back to Battery or DOOR adjar, and the chime to stop (Do not try to START if the chime is still sounding) 6.) Once chime stops and Security light has passed, You may now complete the turn to START and it will start.

Note: This is not a permanent workaround, but it will buy you some time, I can almost guarantee it will work for most if not all people, almost all the time.

Security light is on my 1999 Chevrolet suburban how to reset it

Passlock on this vehicle shows the key does not have a pellet and no transponder. It's just a mechanical key. It is the tumbler that communicates with passlock sensor. The passlock sensor wiring is noted for problems. Can you check applicable trouble codes?

Safelock on 2006 Pontiac Torrent. Randomly prevents starting. Seems to reset after a day or so. Is there a way to disable

It is the passlock system not safelock An you can't just disable it . It is software program into the BCM - body control module an the PCM - powertrain control module .Simply disconnecting the wires from the ignition to the BCM will render your vehicle useless . If an when the security symbol light is on you need to have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . A GM dealer ,Chevy , Buick , Cadillac etc.... we know Pontiac is no longer around. Everything will work except the PCM will not let the fuel injectors work .
Passlock?"¢ System
The theft deterrent system has been incorporated into the body control module (BCM). The theft deterrent system is provided in order to prevent the vehicle operation if the correct key is not used in order to start the vehicle. The ignition key allows the lock cylinder to rotate. The cylinder rotation produces an analog voltage code in the Passlock?"¢ sensor. This voltage code is received by the BCM. The BCM compares the voltage code to the previously learned voltage code. If the codes match, a serial data message is sent from the BCM to the powertrain control module (PCM). The message enables the fuel injector operation.
The design of the Passlock?"¢ system is to prevent vehicle theft by disabling the engine unless the ignition lock cylinder rotates properly by engaging the correct ignition key. The system is similar in concept to the Passkey system. However, the Passlock?"¢ system eliminates the need for any key mounted components. The components of the Passlock?"¢ system are as follows:
?€¢
The ignition lock cylinder

?€¢
The ignition switch

?€¢
The Passlock?"¢ sensor

?€¢
The BCM

?€¢
The security indicator

?€¢
The PCM

What to do to reset whne driver unknown come up

it looks like a failure in the theft deterrent system, but Trailvoys contain Passlock security, not PassKey. Passlock consists of a hall-effect sensor and tamper resistor within the ignition cylinder housing, while the PassKey system uses a transponder in the ignition key head.

Passlock isn't affected by contamination of the key, but there are a number of things that can cause it to fail - high or low voltages, problems with the Passlock circuits, module communication failures...
Your best bet is to have the diagnostic trouble codes pulled - there are at least eight associated with Passlock failure

If I put in a new ignition switch do I have to reset something?

You will probably have to reset the passlock (security) system with the new switch/key. The aftermarket switches come with instructions to reset the passlock code.

Pass lock problems

Your Passlock may need to relearn the ignition keys, if the ignition lock has gone bad like my in-laws Grand Am Gt, here is what i did so they will not get stranded any more. Buy a Passlock by pass module for around $70.00. You can order one from GMPASSLOCK.COM in the mean time try resetting the Passlock. Good luck

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure
1.) Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2.) Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start.
3.) Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF.
4.) Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds.
5.) Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes.
The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
6.) Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password.
7.) With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles.

Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.

If the ignition lock has not been damaged, ( that's where the GM Passlock system reads the ignition key) here is how you reset the Passlock to youe keys.

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.

Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know you got your car running again.
