1997 dodge intrepid, 3.5, 24 valve engine. Idle is rough/erratic, tries to die sometimes at stop---- when in gear but runs smooth over about 1300 rpm, drives smooth at low and at highway speeds. I've replaced: EGR Valve Assy., Intake manifold gaskets, coil , ignition wires and plugs. I ran Sea Foam thru intake manifold and added it to fuel tank and I cleaned Idle Air Control Valve....... all without success. MIL Lamp is off.

Check for ghost codes, the light does not need to be on to have codes stored. I would also check your vacuum lines as these can have strange impacts on a idle. check you pcv valve to make sure it is working proper

My problem was solved when I repaired my 4 wd activation dash switch. The switch was contacting on 2WD & 4HI at the same time. The front differential activation is vacuum activated possibly creating a tug of war that didn't actually engage it but drained off vacuum from the engine? A theory at best but stumbbled across it because I knew the switch wasn't working properly I repaired it and low and behold rough idle disappeared and all is good for 3 weeks running.

Have you heard of Noid lights? You unplug the fuel injector and plug these in and they will light up if the injector is getting power. This might give you a better hint. There are also lights that go inbetween the spark plug and wire. Between these two items you may be able to narrow down the problem to a specific system. I believe that your car has a coil pack. Some of these engines have problems with the crank trigger. I believe it is located on the back side of the motor. If you decide to change it, be careful. I have heard of them breaking into two pieces and becoming a big problem.

put an engine flush in first . run the engine on tick over .till oil is hot then drain it. do an oil and filter change may have a build up of carbon in the engine .the flush should deal with that .use 20/40 oil .

Do you know what engine scan data is ? Disconnecting sensors is not the way to find a problem ! What is the computer seeing as data input signals . Is the vehicle in closed loop fuel control , is the EGR opening when it shouldn't be , Is the PCM controlling the idle air control valve or is the vehicle drive by wire (electronic throttle control ?

Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
