Easy fix
I had the same thing. Under the car where the shifter goes through the floor is a plate that the shifter is attached to. Only ONE screw holds this in place. You need to put on a lift to fix.
reach up and in to replace the screw. I added two more to be sure

This is a common Problem

The shifter bushings are broken, requires (4). You will have to take the console out to see what needs done. You can fix it without them if you are a little mechanical. You will see when you get the console out. Here is a good source for the parts: http://www.midcomustang.com/

Here is a good online manual in pdf format: http://www.techcapri.com/Repair/Capri_Service_Manual.htm

If you don't feel confident enough to tackle this, any good shop could do this job within a few hours time.

Your shifter stabilizer Bar Assembly needs to be replaced ( http://shop.moderncapriparts.biz/catalog/ProductDisplay.cfm?id=14061&cid=148 ). There are small plastic clips in the square shaped end of the bar. Unfortunately, they can not be independently replaced. The best place to find this and all 1991-94 Capri parts is Modern Capri Parts. Go to: http://www.ModernCapriParts.Biz

1998 pontiac sunfire gt standard transmission diagram having shifter problems trying to find out why

Check that as you move the shifter, that the shifting rods beneath are moving in tune with the shifter's position.
If not, then your mechanism is faulty.
It is almost certain that the issue lies with the external shifting mechanism.
The issue may be just beneath the shifter lever, within the rubber or leather bag shroud. You might have to pull out the centre console to have a closer inspection.

Shifter is very loose, sloppy.

The shifter linkage has a two piece plastic / nylon bushing at either end of the gear shift tube that goes from the gear shift lever to the transmission. As the bushes wear through normal usage the gear shift becomes sloppy. The bushes at the gear shift lever end usually wear out first.
You may have to drop the exhaust pipe to access the underside of the gear lever as there is not a lot of space to work in above the exhaust.
To replace, remove the securing nut and through bolt where the underside of the gear lever U section attaches to the tube. Pull down the tube and the worn bits of the bush will come out. Place the new bushes in either side of the tube and put tube end back between the U section. Replace the through bolt and nut. If still a little sloppy, you may have to do the transmission end bushes as well.

I have a 1996 Saturn SL 1 manual transmission with 76,000, yea I do not use it to commute. While changing gears the stick just got lose. It now just moves back and forth freely. Gears do not change, still...

From you're description it sounds like a shift cable failed or got
disconnected or there may be a problem in the shift control housing on the transmission. Have somone move the shifter around while you watch the shift control housing below the battery tray to see if the cable is connected and moving if it's
connected but little or no movement, remove the shift boot and
and check that end of the cable linkage. Hope this helps.

4.2l. Why is shifter stuck?

With the car started press on the brake pedal. Listen carefully for a "Click" sound coming from under the gear shift cover. If you do not hear one you will need to test the brake pedal switch, if you hear a click then most likely the lock somehow became disconnected from the solenoid. Remove the shifter cover and the assemble is can be seen for troubleshooting and repair.
