IT is possible but the car should start in park. Check immobiliser. Run fault codes for cam/crank position sensor problems. Check that timing belt is ok.

The neutral safety switch is located in the shifter housing.

Here is a link to a good article on this topic, that would beat an explanation from me.

Yes, it sounds like the NSS is the culprit.

The click you hear is the starter relay. Check for continuity thru relay with battery negative cable disconnected and switch in start position. If no continuity, it probably has burned contacts. Sometimes these can be taken apart and contacts filed/sanded cleaned.

Got a 2005 Pontiac Montana it will not start by the key switch will start if I short out the starter what would it be?

If everything else is working, most probable cause is a faulty ignition switch, or a starter relay (if the vehicle has one).

My 2001 Pontiac montana has power but wont start

Do you know how to test automotive electrical circuits ? Do you know what a electrical wiring diagram is. Have a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? How about a automotive relay , do you know what it is an how it works ? Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year , make , model ,engine . Under system click on engine , then under subsystem click on starting. Click the search button ,then the blue link . You will see all the componets involved in starting the vehicle. ignition switch , starter range switch , starter relay , PCM -powertrain control module . When you turn the ignition switch to the start position it sends a voltage signal to the PCM , this tells the PCM start is requested , in turn the PCM energize's the starter relay . This will close contacts inside the relay allowing B+ voltage at pin 30 of the relay to go to the starter solenoid . engaging the starter . Checking fuse's an power an ground , testing relay control . . Videos on youtube for electrical testing.

How to test or replace the ignition switch in 2001 Pontiac Montana

The last ignition switch I worked on was on a 1996 Pontiac sun fire. It was located on the left side of the steering column across from the key tumbler under the plastic. I found the start wires and jumpered them making the starter turn. Next I removed the switch from the column, and with a screwdriver, I turned it until the starter once again turned. I found the tumbler assembly wasn't turning far enough to start it. There was a small metal cover on the tumbler that had popped up and kept it from going farther. Hope this helps. There are some useful videos on YouTube that may help also.

I have a Pontiac Grand am se 2.3 liter that won't start everything powers on but hen I turn the key to start it nothing happens not even a clicking to stay an get it t I start??

Turn on headlamps and try to start. Do lights dim? Yes= bad battery connections, low charge on battery, bad solenoid, bad starter. Not dimming? bad solenoid, bad starter switch, bad neutral safety switch, bad starter relay, bad ignition switch. Use voltmeter to see if ignition switch works, and so on.

Pontiac grand am 2004 3.4 6cylinder installed brand new battery altenator & starter all good car started took it for test drive everything shut off car wont start. lights radio still come on

Sounds like the security system activated or the ignition is bad. If you have an alarm installed remove it. If you don't then replace the ignition switch after checking all fuses in the fuse panel. There is one that can blow and will give you this symptom.

Vehicle will not start, no power to starter

Continue tracing back to the ignition/starter switch and associated fuses.
