I have had a similar problem with my 99 Escort – 2.0 auto. I too tried changing thermostats, checking cooling fan operation, checking compressor, cleaning radiator etc. The overheating only occurred in the summer months and not in winter where it is very cold here in Minnesota. The procedure that solved the problem was to recharge and reset the air conditioning system. This has completely eliminated the overheating. The technician said that the compressor was recycling way too often which caused the overheating in several heater/air control positions.

Overheating can seriously damage a car's engine if left unchecked. Although overheating simply means that a car's engine temperature exceeds normal operating temperatures, the causes of overheating are varied. What follows is a brief list of some of the most common causes of engine overheating.

Are you loosing any coolant? Has a coolant pressure test showen anything, if its been done? Are you sure your guage is correct? Does it get to the point that it will boil if you was to keep going? Its posible that sediment in the engine block has brook loose and has lodged and is blocking the flow thru one of the water jackets just a thought.
