2002 Hyundai Elantra had very dark black transmission fluid when I drained it. I took the pan off and do not see a filter at all. Is it possible no filter is used on this model?
Here is some info I came across for the Elantra GLS model.
"The filter in this transmission is not intended to be serviced. To replace the filter, you must remove and disassemble transmission."
I see transmission filters are sold for the 2002 Hyundai Elantra so you should call an auto parts store to verify. You will of course need the pan gasket and maybe the sealant for the gasket.
Many Japanese cars stopped using trans filters in the late '90. Not sure why Hyundai still does.
The black fluid indicate it has overheated. Transmission fluid is redish.
Here is what one other person found out and was told this filter is not intended for service;
I am working on a 2002HyundaiElantra GLS auto transmissionfilter. I am stuck. I am surprised to see the filter is vertically positioned behind the radiator, partially below battery and air duct and air box , on driver side (left) of vehicle. Normally I expected it horizontally under the car , like in 1999 model. Instead, it is vertical. I can remove almost all the bolts except 3 on left side, no room to get to. First, I drained fluid from bottom plug, Removed bottom shield. Removed top shield covering battery. Then I see the black pan of transmissionfilter vertically. I removed right side , top, bottom bolts, The left side bolts are hidden under battery, air duct and air box. I used rachet wrench, extension, flex adapter, I still cannot reach those 3 bolts. How do you guys do it? remove battery, battery tray, then air box, and air hose? Here is some info I came across for the Elantra GLS model.

Why do half the posters I read on the web think there is no filter on this transmission? There absolutely IS a filter in this transmission. You must drain and pull the pan to get to it. It is held on with three bolts. DO NOT let any dealer or service center BACK-FLUSH your tranny as all the stuff collected by the filter will be pushed right back into the tranny and cause more issues!!
Hi, the transmission filter is mounted to the transmission (automatic transmission only) within the transmission fluid pan. This pan is underneath the vehicle, close to the engine in front of the front wheels. It is covered by a splash shield...
A Service Department as a Hyundai Service Department typically uses a "Fluid Exchange" machine (approx. 7 quarts of Hyundai SPIII fluid) to do a flush. There is a drain plug at the bottom of the transmission (24 mm bolt) to drain it. However, this method is not entirely/completely effective. This drain plug only empties the pan, not the torque converter -- so you're only replacing about 3 to 4 quarts with this method (torque converter does not drain). So, once you've replaced the 3 to 4 quarts this way, there's still contaminated fluid in the torque converter which will circulate back into the rest of the transmission. RECOMMENDATION: Have a certified technician do a flush (fluid exchange).
NEED check engine light code. just shooting in the dark, but it could be your throttle position sensor or the gear indicator (some times called neutral safety switch). to try and reset it (works on some models) when its doing this (giving you grief). pull over to the side of the road when safe and shut off the car (put in park) then press the accelerator all the way to the floor for 30 seconds. then start the car (take foot off of accelerator first) might cure the problem. engine error code would be most helpfull
To change the transmission fluid make sure you have purchased: 1.
filter with the o-ring 2. MOPAR ATF + 3 Type 7176, p/n 05010124AA fluid
(I believe it took 6 quarts?) You are not changing the torque converter
fluid so there will not be 12 quarts needed.). 3. Pan gasket. You
should receive the new neoprene reusable pan gasket. This is because
the recommendation is to change the transmission fluid every 25,000
miles. 4. There is a fluid additive to prevent foaming? Use it.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Remove the pan bolts. Remove the
old gasket material with a plastic scraper. There could be metal
transfer if you use a metal scraper. Clean the pan carefully. Clean the
magnet that sits in the pan as it collects the minute metal shavings.
If you see an excess of larger particles, you really should have the
transmission inspected at a shop. Replace the filter carefully looking
at its arrangement before removing. It took a second look to install a
new filter because I did not watch how it was situated before removing.
Use a thin coat of transmission fluid on the new pan gasket. Orient
reusable gasket properly with bolt holes and assemble oil pan and
gasket to transmission case. Tighten oil pan bolts to 19 Nm (165 in
lbs.). CAUTION: DO NOT OVERFILL TRANSAXLE. DO NOT ADD OIL IF LEVEL IS
BETWEEN: LOWER HOLES FOR WARM OIL (100?F). UPPER HOLES FOR HOT OIL
(180?F.).
