I have a 98 S70 turbo ~171000 mi. car will start

I have a 98 S70 turbo ~171000 mi. car will start and run for short time, then shuts off and cannot be re-started until after having remained off for a while. Retrieved P0410, P0243& P0103 from obd. P0410 is there because air pump failed long ago and was disconnected. need help on other codes. Thanks

Will give these suggestions a shot. Stay tuned....

    Thanks

Finally got chance to check your suggestions, i.e. fuel relay and fuel pressure. Both pressure and relay appear ok. Borrowed fuel pressure gauge from local parts house and pressure was ~ 40 psi at ignition ON (not start). Bleed down exeeded time specified by volvo shop manual. Car still will not start. Shop manual troubleshoot procedure recommended, checking spark, all OK (Installed new spark plugs also). Manual suggests trying Mass Air Flow meter. Any thoughts on MAF as cause of problem?

Final resolution of this problem was the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) Thanks.

THE FIRST THING IS TO CHECK FIEL PUMP PRESSURE AND FILTHER AND THE RELAY IT IS IN FUSE BOX WITH A J and it is black and if it gets too hot engine will shut down and you will have to wait until relay cools 850,s and S70 models have this problem especially in th A/C CIRCUIT

What do I when my 98 volvo s70 2.4L engine has trouble codes po133 & po442?

Po133 is and oxygen sensor code. Replace the front oxygen sensor use a bosch or OE sensor only. P0442 is and evap system leak. Most common fault is a cracked hose at the evap cannister at the right rear of the car.

1989 Lotus Esprit turbo, starts won't idle, shuts off after 2 seconds.

I do not know your vehicle but in that time frame a lot of cars used what is called a ballast resistor. During start it was shorted allowing the coil to output more power, once the engine came up to speed about two seconds the short was removed. Shorting simply means bypassing the resistor. I hope that helps.

Both radiator hoses are hard why 98 s70 volvo turbo

It has been my experience that both radiator hoses get hard with age, check the hoses for age and cracking because they usually are hard right before they give out. They get hard when they get old due to excessive oil covering because of an oil leak and heat from the engine and the coolant within the hose.

Why would my 1998 s70 suddenly decellarate from 75 mi p/hr on interstate to 0.what could be the cause, no engine noises or smoking

Did the engine stall or did it just lose power but stay running? Did the gauges fall to "0" or idle?

Usually when something major like that happens, the check engine light will come on and there will be codes set in the computer.

I would start by checking the codes, and if at all possible, use Volvo's VIDA and DiCE interface to make sure you get the right codes. Some generic code readers can't read all the Volvo specific stuff.

That will get you closer to the actual problem.

Rule out the simple stuff. Do you have enough gas in the tank? The gas gauge might be wrong and you're empty. The ETM could be wonky and on its way out. Google "Volvo ETM" and read up - there's a sticker on it and the color of the sticker could indicate if you have the old (likely faulty) module or not.

Ignition wires - these engines are coil on plug if I remember right (they changed around those years '98 or '99) and then you check the little wires to the coils.

How do i find the engine size for a 98 volvo s70

Depending on if you have a high pressure Turbo or not. The engine in my S70 T5 is a high pressure turbo 2.3 litre. Look on your driver side fender(under the hood) for the VIN Tag and it will tell you what engine is in your car.

My 98 turbo s70 alarm went off and will not allow us to start the car. drivers door will not unlock any other doors and the hazards go off for about 10 seconds each attempt at starting, Help!! Erik

Try unlocking the trunk with the key, otherwise lock the door with the key, then unlock it holding the key in the extreme unlock position for five seconds.

I have a 98 volvo s70 and i dont know the engine size how do i figure out the difference between 2.3 or 2.4

All S70's have a 2.4 liter. There should be a numbers like 2.4 or 2400cc or something like that. The 7th and 8th vin digit is the engine. 55 is a B 2454 S engine. If unsure call the dealer parts dept and they can tell you, based on the VIN number.

98 volvo s70 stalling out, then finally after a day wouldnt start

If the air pump system is setting a fault, then the check valve is probably bad. If it is not addressed, eventually exhaust gases can run back through the air hose to the air filter housing and destroy the MAF sensor, causing these types of problems.

The fuel pump also fails and is a more likely cause of the stalling, and it wont set a code.
