When we put the key in it will not turn. If I fiddle with it it will eventually turn and start the car. I can turn the wheel with the key out. I am thinking it might be something in that locking syste

We have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent. When we put the key in it sometimes will not turn. If you fiddle with it you can get the switch to turn. Also it seems the wheel lock does not engage. I can turn the wheels with the key out. What do you think and how do I go about fixing it?

I have the exactly the sdame problem. Right now, I can't even turn the engine on which means ignition locks up. I think this problem is a manufacturing defect. I talk to the dealer about reapair cost. The part( Ingnition lock cylider) was $140.00 and labor was $240.00, total cost $400.00. It is terrible. There are not much thing driver can harm the system. It is the part (cylinder) that goes wrong normally. I think it is the manufacturing defect.

I think that you need a new ignition tumbler You can find instructions in most manuals. If key has a security feature you may need a dealer to re-code it though. Job is not terribly difficult but you need to follow instructions exactly to avoid getting getting smacked in the face by the airbag!!! (no fun)

Why won't my ignition key turn over and my steering wheel is locked in place at the sametime?

I'm assuming you mean your key wont turn in the ignition. first off check to make sure the car is in park. then what you gotta do is put in the key and put a little pressure as if turning but dont turn too hard, then even though the steering wheel is locked you will have to try to move it a little, if you parked with your tires turned then you will want to try to turn the wheel in the same direction, (even locked you should be able to move it about a half inch) you will have to turn the wheel hard but it should move enough to allow the key to turn, you may have to jiggle the key a little in the ignition but it should eventually turn, just remember not to try turning the key too hard, the extra force wont make it go but can cause the key to break. this tends to happen when you turn the car off andthe steering wheel gets locked if the wheels are turned hard in either direction. also if multiple attempts at this still dont work, try taking the key out and turning it over and trying again. Even though both sides of the key are identicle, because of wear on the key and the ignition, sometimes when the wheel locks the ignition, it will only turn if the key is put in a certain way. Hope this helps, good luck

Key will not turn wheel wont move and cant shift gears what can it be

You have locked the steering wheel. You will need to be forceful with the steering wheel and keep trying to turn the key when turning the steering wheel. It will eventually let you turn the key and start the car.

Good Luck,

My sreering wheel is locked and the ignitionwont turn over

IF this is the same problem as in the Dodge Caravan's, then put the key in the ignition and tap it with a hammer, big wrench, etc. Not too hard! My caravan does the same thing and I can jam the key in the lock and get it to turn fine. Eventually you will have to replace the igintion lock cylinder.

Ignition key will not turn

The steering wheel lock is preventing you from turning the ignition tumbler. Especially when the tires are turned all the way in one direction this can be very difficult to get free. What you need to do is wriggle the key as you attempt to move the steering wheel in the direction that it is already turned, it will take some force, but eventually the wheel will give just enough play to allow the key to turn and it will be just fine

Tried to start vehicle but key won't turn in ignition.any solutions

Hi
The steering wheel doesn't need to be straight ahead but if it was parked with the steering wheel turned and there was a binding up of the wheels it may take turning the steering wheel a little to the left or right to release the steering wheel lock, this is especially true if it is parked up or downhill with the wheels turned.
If the wheel won't unlock there is no other choice other than to call the dealer and have it towed there to have it fixed under the warranty.
However there are two other things you can do by your own before goin to the repair shop...
1) Buy some graphite at the Hardware store and put it in the key hole. This works for a while but needs to be repeated and can be a bit messy.
2) Put the key in the ignition slowly and gently, gently try turning the key as you are putting the key further in. Eventually, you will reach the point where the key turns and you should be able to start the vehicle.
Hope this helps.

Hello, my steering wheel is locked! I tried wiggling the wheel and turning the key and that didnt solve the problem. Let me mention the ignition would not turn over in the first place, even when my car...

All you need to do is turn your steering wheel to the left all the way till it stops then put your key in while still holding the steering wheel to the left, turn the key to the on position this should release your steering wheel!

1993 toyota camry ignition wont turn

the steering wheel SHOULD be locked if the key is not in the ignition and turned to the 1st position.  If you can turn the steering wheel more than an inch or so without the key n the first position,  the ignition switch (read: thingy you put the key in) is bad.
Sometimes you may have to move the steering wheel slightly to one side or the other to get the key to turn,  this in itself is not a cause for alarm. Try it and let us know.  If this doesn't work, you are probably looking at a couple hundred dollars parts and labor to get the switch/steering wheel lock mechanism fixed.

2006 chevy equinox lt can't get the key to turn. so the car won't start, stuck in park all-wheel drive so it won't tow or move out of the parking spot.

Turn the key while turning the wheel, either to left or right. "jiggleitalittleit'llopen" I had the same thing happen to our GMC safari, the steering wheel got locked. The wheel had turned sharply and it was jammed. I fiddled with it turning the wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key, eventually it popped loose. 'WHEW!' Good Luck!
