Van backfires through air filter housing then rough running, stalls and can't get started again. changed wires and plugs plus catalytic converter, still same problem?

What happened sound very much like either you slipped a tooth on the timing belt/chain or the it broke. the first clue is the back fire, and then the no start. your going to have to take the cover off the timing chain to see if this is the case. i would imagine that if it isn't broke but it doesn't start then it slip the gear. if you have not done this kind of work then i suggest find a friend to help or take to a good shop

If the car runs for a while and then stalls you should suspect that internal parts of the catalytic converter are lodging themselves in the exaust pipe between the first catalytic converter and the second or between the second converter and the exhaust pipe muffler. When the catalyst chunks partially block the hole the car will stall. To test, try opening the exhaust after the first converter just enough to make it really loud and try driving it to see if the problem disappears. If it does you will have to remove pipe sections until you find the catalyst chunks and remove them.

Get rid of cold air intake and re install stock also sounds like your mass air flow unit is going out or your cars ecm isnt operating properly check air filter make sure its not clogged up then check all your vacuum hoses for cracks,dry rot or kinks making sure none are pinched causing vacuum to not respond.ok after this check the fumes from exhaust for color but it could also be catalytic converter even though it says air temp.when this problem occurs it can be number of things spray electric cleaner on wires as well and check for loose wires now take your time going over these things to be sure you accurately inspect this

Chevy venture stalled

Compression, spark , timing , fuel for any engine to run. Don't forget a stopped up catalytic convertor will have the same effect as you described. Backfiring of course is fouled plugs, bad plug wires, look for arcing from wires when it is dark outside. If it has a distributor check for cracked cap, had my 91 GMC start backfiring then die due to ignition module inside distributor going bad. It would start back up after it cooled for about 10 minutes.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was running good but then all of a sudden it starts running rough. You can be driving down the road and all of a sudden it will die . It will run good for about 10-15...

It could be a dirty idle air control valve located on the throttle body but when you said it backfires after running a while and before stalling, this sounds like a clogged catalytic converter. When blocked they will cause the exhaust manifold to glow red igniting gasses on the exhaust stroke, backfiring. A clogged cat will result in a loss of power as if you are trying to pull a trailer full of rocks uphill.

signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator. the vehicle runs rough, the engine will not start usually in the mornings. many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. black soot on plugs, blake smoke from tailpipe, running rough, stalling. you could have residue in fuel tank and need to change fuel filter again. have a very good day !!

Van starts and runs fine for about 70 to 100miles than when you slow down will backfire, lose power and stall. Can restart with difficulty, but engine willsputter and backfire. If engine cools completely...

just a guess here but check coil for breakdown check timing and even check plugs wires distributor cap and even catalytic converter if it clogs up it can cause these problems

My 3.3 ciera stalls and runs rough when its cold but as soon as its warm its fine to drive it has a new temp switch and fuel pump

could bea few things. Excessive moisure, low fuel pressure, Faulty coil pack, spark plugs gap or wires. Have you changed any of those at all? Let me know

maybe your iac valve is not working? it takes place of a choke or temp sender to computer could be bad which controls t I.A.C. known as the idle control valve,do you have any codes?

Your cat should last quite a while now it is replaced. I recommend testing coil packs and module. Change plugs and wires and double check your vacuum hoses.
