Cranks over but does not start, fuel gauge shows empty, light is on. When it does run it goes about 15-25 min then shuts down. I already changed the cps. Tank has fuel.

  • Robert Garvey Sep 21, 2013

It is a 4.0 6 cylinder. Also when it does shut down. Sometimes I can wiggle connecter that goes into computer and I hear clicking. I check gas gauge it shows gas in tank, I can start. It just keeps going through this cycle

any thing over 30psi is fine.

try this take the tank cap off and run engine if it runs fine and longer than it has it could be the vent line for the tank.. if you wigle the wires and you hear clicking then the socket needs to be checked as it should do this. this also could be your problem some thing may not be getting the right signal of voltage.

SOURCE: oil gauge goes up and down.

If grounding the dash does not work, try putting a mechanical gauge on it and reading actual oil pressure. Pressure does change while driving, but should not wander. With mechanical gauge, check that running hot at idle (in gear if automatic) pressure should not drop lower than 15psi (I'd rather see 20) High reading should be around 40 -50 but no higher.Low pressure indicates a loss of supply or bad bearing on the crankshaft, high pressure may be caused by sticking pressure relief or restriction in an oil passage.

SOURCE: 2001 jeep cherokee cranks, no start, no bus

I just had the same problem of my 2001 jeep cherokee not starting with no gauges responding and a "no bus" reading. After reading the responses I changed out the CPS and my jeep now runs great! however, it was not as hard as I thought it would be. Very easy with 7/16 bit and a 10inch extender. In and out in less than 5 minutes. Finding it was the hardest part. Blends in with the bell housing. I did this from under the jeep with a good shop light. I paid about $80 for the part here in Atlanta, GA

Check fuses first, but could be needs new CPU

Testimonial: "Thanks for your help, we checked the fuses even swapped out the relays. The CPU was a thought but someone else tried it and it didn't work. Might still try it though. Is there any other symptoms that would indicate the CPU is bad? We changed out the ignition switch, 135.00, changed the CPS, 42.00. I hear the CPU is about 150.00. When we run the tester it comes back with no error codes."

Low fuel light flashing

Most likely just a faulty ground connection. When something electrical goes wrong, always check the ground FIRST. You already know the gauge itself is working, because it will move on it's own. It has to be grounded well in order for the sending unit in the tank to show proper reading. If all grounds are good, it would be a faulty sending unit in the tank. Best to check ALL connections.

2003 grand Cherokee cranks over and will not start. Changed the cps already. The fuel gauge reads empty, empty light comes on and circle with key and line threw it is on dash board. When it does start...

You will have to check each connector on the PCM for moisture and the wires for shaving. Fuel quantity info comes from the PCM via the PCI data bus. Moisture in one of the connectors could short the data bus out and the engine will not start and indicators go to zero.

It sounds like a shorted class2 data line to me. Is the scanner giving you U-codes? (U1000, U1042, etc.) If you are getting U-codes that is your problem.

What is the correct year ? Above your post it says 2005 Chevrolet Malibu but your post shows 1997 ????? An what size engine ? 3.1 or 3.4 or 2.4 L I would also say your crankshaft position sensor could be bad , but that's just a guess ! Without testing that's all anyone on here can do , guess . Videos on youtube showing how to test crank sensor !

Plus you state that you ohm check ground connections , sorry but that's not the way to check . You do voltage drop testing ? Suggest you watch this . The Trainer 47 What measuring voltage on the ground side means
