Rear brakes gone at 30,000 miles. Is this normal?

How do I know what brakes I have?

  • montehammons Sep 21, 2013

Just look at them. Probably don't even have to pull the wheel off. Caliper brakes with rotors are exposed-should see the shiny part of the rotor. Drum brakes are not exposed, but have the brake shoes inside the "old style" drum that fits over the wheel hub. When the wheel is taken off, all you see is that drum with the wheel lug studs poking out of it. If still not sure, have someone look at it for you. Anyone who has worked on cars or brakes can tell you.

Certainly not. Still under warranty? Are they rear calipers or drum brakes with brake shoes? If drum brakes, they are self adjusting. You drive in reverse a short distance, hit the brakes, reverse again, hit the brakes. Every time you do that, the adjuster will move the brake shoes outward as needed to adjust for wear.
Try it and see if the brakes are better. Brakes with calipers and rotors do not require adjustment-they are truly self adjusting.

2012 Hyundaii Accent with 30,000 miles. Rear brakes gone,is this possible

Yes especially if you are heavy footed on brakes. Do you coast to a slow then apply or are you waiting till close to required stop point?
Brake pads can be of different grades and wear quickly if of low grade. Are your rotors gone too or just the pads?

It only has 30,000 miles on it and the rear brakes squeal when applied when first driven cold. Does not do it after it has been driven and warmed up.

brakes typically only last about mas 30k miles. might be the brake lining warning shims letting you know its low or that plus glazed rotors/ drums needing to be replaced and or cut.

Does the transmission fluid ever have to be changed? 5.4 L auto

hi yes the transmision fluid starts to brake down and gets thinner, normally it is best changed every 30,000 miles ( some say 60,000 ) but i find that it starts to burn and thin arround 30,000 so best to replace it early, you can use MERCON fluid which is best for this vehicle......hope this helped

What type of maintenance my car would need after 90,000 miles

There is no special service needed at 90,000 miles other than the normal Air Filter & Cabin Filter replacement every 30,000 miles. Inspect all drive belts and hoses. You do need to replace Brake Fluid every 3 years independent of mileage. At 110,000 miles replace the spark plugs on a 4 cylinder, 105,000 on a V6. Replace engine coolant at 120,000 or 10 years on both engines. Replace A/T fluid at 60,000 miles. On the V6 at 105,000 miles replace the Cam belt and Water Pump. The 4 cylinder has a chain that you replace when it is noisy or you cannot keep the engine in time.

At what mileage should the rear brakes be replaced? Is it common for the rear brakes to be replaced at less than 22,000 miles on a 2007 Sonata gls?

Most of the stopping power goes to the front of the car. You usually go thru two sets or sometimes three sets of front pads before you need to change the rear brakes. It sounds odd the rear brakes need to be replaced at 22,000. havee the front brakes been replaced before?

Brake maintenance

It really depends on the type of driving you do most of. Highway miles very little wear, mostly city driving alot of wear.
Rule of thumb is usually front around 30,000 and rear around 50,000.
