MX-3 with V6 Manual transmission. Engine idle revving up and down
Shortly after I start my MX-3 when cold the idle goes up and down from 1000 rpm to about 2,500 rpm. Then after running for about 15 minutes it returns to a normal idle. Only seems to do it when starting from cold. Is there something that needs replacing. I have replaced the AIr filter but not sure what would cause this .
Thank you Julio. I will get on that and I did recently replace the connector junction hose from the air box to the engine. I live in Victoria BC so us Canadians are use to the cold air although not quite so bad here as the rest of Canada - Cheers, Paul.Thank you Julio. Re: MX-3 with V6 Manual transmission. Engine idle revving...
You should check your engine's AIR hoses that are connecting to the airbox. sometimes a simple airleak will be enough to alter your idle. Specially when its cold the car will already idle rough ( I know im canadian lol). So go check your air hoses ;)

All the above is normal , except 2000rpm is a little high at idle . can be adjusted down to 1500rpm. the computer adjusts the engine speed . in drive the transmission loads up the engine idle drops to 1000rpm . in park engine unloaded rpm increase all normal.
Sounds like the rear pads are worn out, your front brakes are keeping the truck from rolling. You need to have the high rpm checked for that 30-50 seconds as it is called the "cold start routine" and is meant to rev the engine for that time period. There may be an adjustment to keep it from over revving, check the specs for the rpm.
Even if you fix the rear brakes, the stress on the U-joints and differential or transmission is needless and can be fixed by limiting the high rpm in the "cold start cycle".
No,only on carburated engines it,idles down to the set point,on yours,it's fuel injected, pushing gas pedal won't kick idle down, should go down after a certain amount of time, does it automatically,If you start and drive a 5 mile ride and stop at a stop sign,it should idle at it's set point if there's no engine problems, which may be.5 to .7 on your tac. When you normally first start,it will idle between 1000 to 1200 rpm's,don't push on gas,let idle say 15 seconds, put in drive and go.
I am having the same issue after I changed my battery today. Upon doing some research it seems like there is some way of aiding the computer with proper idling. I haven't done it yet... plan on going to the dealership where I got the battery, but from my understanding you disconnect the negative line from the battery for a few mins, reconnect, and then apply gas at 3000 rpm for a few mins until the fan kicks on. AND this will help reset your car to proper idling. Good luck
If you go to advance auto they will scan the car for free. if you write the codes down and update your question it will be easier to eliminate some of the sensors.
normal for an engine to start at elevated rpm and then die back as it takes a few seconds for the ECM doing it's sensor checks and idle back to the correct idle speed
check the idle rpm with an external rpm counter as most in dash units are inaccurate at rpm lower than 1000
as for the temperature
If you have a climate control module, it uses a mixture of heater and ac to maintain the temperature that you have set
so check it for operation

do you have any trouble codes or a check engine light?
Did you ever find the problem? I have the same problem.
