SOURCE: 1991 mazda b2200- timing belt changed

The keyway and or the dot on the crank should be line at 12 oclock. You will see a point on the oil pump housing to go by. On the camshaft the pointer will be at 12 oclock also. Use the O on the camshaft to the top at mark. Be sure to look at the dist. roter to make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. I could get 180 out of time. If you do it right it should start up right away. then you can use a timing light to finish it.

SOURCE: setting distributor jeep wrangler 1997 4L

I'm going to assume that you have some idea where the rotor was pointing before you took unit out.
Turn the crankshaft by hand 'till you find the small notch on the back edge of the pulley. Mark the notch with white crayon. Turn the crank untill the mark you made lines up with "0" on the scale on the right side (facing engine) at about 2 oclock. (sometimes needs to be cleaned off to read it) You are now either dead on or 180degrees out of phase. (rotor will be pointing directly away from where you think it should be if it is 180 out). If close to original location, make a mark on outside of dist housing, directly below #1 ign wire post. Remove cap and check that rotor is aligned with the mark you made. If it is not, remove distributor part way, till you can feel the drive gear just disengage, then turn rotor towards the reference position. Once positioned, push distributor housing back down into block. If it does not drop down fully, have someone turn the crank by hand two full turns back to reference mark while you push gently down on distributor. when the oil pump shaft engages, dist will drop down.
If you found dist to be 180 out, remove it and turn rotor to proper position, then follow instructions above.
The timing is non adjustable on these engines.(timing is changed by computer) There is a single bolthole in the dist retaining ear (part of dist housing) When checking reference points, always keep this hole lined up with bolt hole in block. Before attempting to start engine, make sure that after everything is bolted down, your reference marks match!
There are several other ways to do this. This is the most simple and safest way. as at no time is the ignition key in the "on" position, while making these adjustments..
Turning the engine with the key "on", even by hand, & even with the timing out of phase can result in "kickback" which can and usually does hurt someone.

I need a picture and spark plug diagram and timing degree setting for a 1987 jeep wrangler with a 4.2 engine

Check this on 1987 Jeep Wrangler 4.2 liter L6 VIN "C" 2-bbl

Ignition timing is a measurement, in degrees of crankshaft rotation, of the point at which each cylinder's spark plug fires. It is normally listed as a specification in degrees before or after Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.

On the 4.2L engine, the timing can be adjusted by turning the distributor in the engine. A graduated timing degree scale located on the timing case cover is used for reference when timing the ignition system. A milled index notch in the vibration damper is used to align the No. 1 cylinder ignition position of the crankshaft with the correct timing degree mark on the graduated scale.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

I need to know what year the engine in my jeep is on it says 5 but it is a 1994 wrangler having problem with timing and cannot get it right. this is a 6 cylinder.

Since both engines have the identical timing setup it likely will not matter which year the engine was made.
If engine came with the vehicle it may have been produced late in 94 and will carry a 95 date (production date is on sticker on door) Your distributor is "locked" and timing cannot be set except that it needs to be placed in the proper position when being installed. (pointing to the #1 wire tower on the cap with the timing mark on crank pulley at tdc. Running timing changes are made by the computer using info from the crank sensor, throttle position sensor, map sensor and cam sensor (inside the distributor housing)

It sounds as the voltage regulator which is built into the back of the alternator has stuck. Occaisionally this even happens on new ones. Would suggest taking the alternator back as it shoud be under warranty.
