the brake system has an equaliser in the line to prevent rear brake lock up when the brakes are applied. It may be jammed from the reverse pressure applied from screwing the pistons back in.. It is a small valve in the brake lines to the rear brakes and can be dismantled for servicing. Other than that may be only the front half of the master cylinder is working and it may be necessary to get both pistons in the master cylinder to work.
Hi, you need to test if the power is coming to the plug for rear brake light. If the power is not there that is your first problems. Also may have earth wire problem.
is it drum brakes in the rear or disc?. it could be that it needs to be bleed out or a bad master cylinder/or the wheel cylinders or slides are seized up .if you need any further insistence feel free to ask again thank you .
the brake lights and the rear turn signals should be the same bulb check the bulbs to make sure they are not blown does your third brake light work if all brake light are out and the bulbs are good check the brake light switch on the brake pedal
Check your rear brakes and their adjustment. If parking brake is seperate check them also. The brakes have to work and be adjusted properly then adjust parking brake.
your rear caliper adjustment is made by using the parking brake,if you don't use it on a regular basis it can cause the rear brakes to not work properly or at all.you need to use the parking brake regularly to avoid this.you may try working the parking brake repeatedly to try and adjust the rear brakes,if that works you may notice your brake pedal is higher or firmer.
How did you check the rear brakes not working? If the van is raised and the wheel hanging, the load sensing proprotioning valve releases the pressure on the brake line and you might not be geting lots of braking on the rear axle. Is that the case? You might need to put axle stands under the suspension arms at the back and put some load in the van and brake see if there is any difference now. Cheers.
