Try putting a can of 'injector cleaner' into the fuel tank. You may just have a partially clogged nozzle.

Engine sputtering idle

Possibly a leaky injector bleeding down the fuel pressure. First check fuel pressure at shutoff, start, and then when it's smooth. If it changes a lot, you would have to raise the fuel rail and power on the pump to see what is happening.

Sputters and dies on cold start, significant drop in gas mileage.

You need to rebuild the carburetor or clean the choke linkage and make sure the choke valve closes cold.
