1989 GMC k2500 4x4 long bed, 98500 miles on odometer. While driving truck I suddenly lost power. Depressing gas pedal only caused the engine to almost die. I was able to limp home at 5mph. The truck will start but depressing the gas pedal causes the truck to lose power 3000 RPM. Want to change fuel filter but can not find pump relay. I'm not a very knowledgeable mechanic.

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator in your EFI (carburator). Sorenson make a rebuild kit complete with gaskets, screens and regulator for around $30.

did you check the fuel pressure? there is a sharder valve on the fuel rail to do this. i know you have to have a certain amount of pressure in order for it to run.i think on fuel injection its around 60 to 70 psi.and on throtle body is around 30 to50.psi. i also know if you run your truck low on fuel alot it will burn up the pump gas is what keeps pump cool. also you said you found a pluged filter witch over time will burn up the pump. hope this helps.

SOURCE: Truck losing power and service engine soon light on

Like to other guy said, give it a tuneup. Also try SEAFOAM to clean carb up of slug. Also check to make sure the butter fly for the choke has not come loose, causing it the choke it down. Failed choke pull-off.

Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.

If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.

Odometer not working

Does your speedometer work? They run off of the same signal. If your speedo works, but not work odo, then there is a mechanical problem inside the instrument cluster. I have seen the gears strip inside the odometer.

1989 Jeep Cherokee all of a sudden is getting terrible gas mileage! Like FIVE miles to the gallon! The exhaust pipe is broken. could that be the cause?

if you drive with holes in the system...you lose power and put strain on the vehicle to perform better and it gets loud and your gas mileage will get worse and worse...so fix it or have someone do it. it's 15mpg normally

Starts fine, idles fine, stalls when put in gear to drive away

Try depressing slightly the gas pedal to see if the engine continues to run when you put it in gear. Might have to depredd gas pedal and brake simultaniusly. if the engine continues to run, then the problem is in the idle circuit. Try decarboning the throttle body and the idle speed control.

Reverse died, engine HOT, drive lurches

I would have to say that your transmission failed. The Tranmission was trying to lock up and the engine was being forced to labor extra hard and that is what more than likely created the extra heat.
