I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with the drivers

I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with the drivers side headlight that is very dim, like a bad ground.I have jumped the ground wire but nothing changes, the socket and bulb have been replaced as well.I checked fuses under the hood and in the dash and all were good.I am seeing postings in regards to headlight fuses for l and r headlights, does the 99 dodge have them as well?

Yes I replaced anything to do with the lighting, bulb, socket, fuses etc.

As far as I know there is a module for the DRLs,I have not swapped out the relay under the hood as of yet because I wasnt sure that relay for the headlights was the problem,I figured if the relay was gone I wouldnt get any of the headlights working.

    There are only two headlights

  • jcrea Apr 19, 2009

Not as of yet, that should answer one of the many variables right.

there are relays in the fuse box located in the engine compartment near the battery for the headlights... they may have gone bad

Did you take a voltage reading at socket of dim one compared to bright one?

Yah, if your getting 12+ to that light as well as other, then they should be same brightness. If dim one lower, I'd be leaning real hard toward DRL module faulty.

If both 12+, then I'd be looking for a ground problem.

Both headlights work but driver side is dim on dodge ram 1500

Time for at least one new headlight. You are better off replacing them both together.

Two things you need to check. 1)check the grounding. A poor grounding almost always causes any light to be dim including your headlights. 2)Your dimmer switch has a potentiometer which could be corroded or a bad resistor in the switch.

Dodge Ram 3500, Headlights are dimmer than they should be.

Hmm. Ok this can be one of two things.
1: Check your grounds, a bad ground will kill the voltage going to the headlights. Find the wires and run them down until the wire somewhere connects to the body by a small bolt or screw. Unscrew the ground and then make sure the connection is not rusty nor painted over. You may want to be bare metal on bare metal. Thats your best bet.
2: Your second solution may be that your alternator may be dragging on the battery causing the headlights to dim. Check that by revving the engine up a little bit and see if the headlights get any brighter. If they do not, It should be the grounds. Also, check if there any other bulbs around the truck that may be out. Just like christmas lights, one bulb goes out, it effects the rest.
Hope this helps. -Steve

2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Driver's side headlight dim

If the ground is good I would take a careful look at the light socket itself. There may be corrosion inside or on the power wire where it goes into the socket or it may just be making poor contact.
You can get a replacement one at any auto parts store. The last one I got was about $10. Get some heat shrink tube to cover your splices, it does a much better job of sealing the splice than tape. Hope this helps.
