Both codes signify a misfire code 301 is misfire in cylinder 1 and code 316 is misfire detected in the first 1000 rpms from the sound of a 2004 im guessing it has coil on plugs meaning a boot and wires from the boot to the computer those boots can be real espensive but your fuel injector could of gone out in cylinder 1 as well

The coil-on-plug. These are common to fail. #1 is easy to get to, all you need is a 7mm socket, an extension, and a ratchet. P0301 tells you that cyl.#1 is not firing everytime it is asked to, P0316 means that during the first 1000 revolutions when you start your truck, there was a misfire. To be sure about the coil, swap the coils with the one next to #1. Clear the codes and wait for the codes to return. If the code P030_ shows up, (P0302 if you swapped it with #2, P0303 for #3, for example) Then remove that coil and get you another!

P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0316* - Engine misfire detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions) Could be a Bad Coil or bad spark plug or a bad wire on cylinder one. Check the plug and the wire first then move to the coil. Good Luck.
SOURCE: f150 2002 4.2 eng codes:
1400 is dpfe, 1151 is an 02 sensor code, 1131 is also 02s11 code, P0316 = Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)
Po301 Cylender 1 misfire, p0174 lean condition bank 2, And p0171 is lean bank 1. Either this is in need of a whosale of repairs or you have computer issues, From looking at the codes i would first do a complete tune up, Including wires, And inspect for a vacume leak before replacing any 02 sensors..

Hi
P0305 is misfire in cylinder #5.
P0306 is misfire in cylinder#6.
P0316 is misfire on start up.
Have the plugs on those 2 cylinders, and the 2 fuel injectors checked, also
check for spark from the coil on those 2 plug wires.
Please get back to us if you have further query or else please
accept the solution.
