Wobbly steering column on 1989 Chevy Silverado 2WD

Wobbly steering could be bad ball joints, bad tie rods, loose lug bolts on the wheels, etc.......You need to find what is not right or take it in to a mechanic for a diagnosis.

If the loose motion is coming from the tilt part, there are three bolts inside the column that need to be tightened up.
Someone would need to remove the steering wheel to access the bolts.

probably take to a dealer and have your computer flashed,sounds like a security issue.

Very common in GM columns. You need to remove steering wheel, use special tool that screws onto center shaft then turn the nut to compress springs, then a snap ring has to be removed. Then remove tool. Remove 3 or 4 phillips screws for turn signal and 2 screw to remove turn signal arm. Pull up on turn signal assembly just enough to get access to 3 phillips screw under assembly which should be loose. Tighten these screws and your wobble will be gone. Good luck. The steering wheel can be removed with a harmonic balancer puller or steering wheel puller. The tool to remove snap ring can be purchased at most auto parts stores I believe for between $15 to $20.

The problem is not a u-joint. The trouble is two torx headed bolts in the steering column. Unfortunatly in order to tighten them up you have to remove the steering wheel, lock plate, and turn signal switch. Once all this is out of the way you can reach down thru the holes in the column and tighten these bolts. This is a common problem with GM vehicles in the 80s. The fix will require a star head socket, along with a steering wheel puller, and lock plate depresser.

The mechanism may just be worn out.Best solution I have, get another steering column.

There is a steering dampener underneath that looks like a strut or shock absorber. Replacing this should correct the problem.

Remove horn pad . After removing the large nut SCRIBE A LINE ON THE CENTER SHAFT and the STEERING WHEEL, Using a steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Now comes the tricky part. Remove signal stalk ( just pull out a couple of inches ),and 4-way flasher knob. Disconnect multiple connector of signal switch. Remove 3 screws holing switch down. Gently pull upward on switch to expose lower steering bowl. The large bolts are LOOSE that secure it, so the reason for the wobble. Tighten bolts, and reverse procedure.

I am experiencing similar problems on an '89 S-10. I have the entire steering column torn apart. There are 4 bolts inside the steering column that come loose and cause the steering wheel to move a little bit. I fixed that problem, but now I'm stuck. I believe there is something that is supposed to attached the shift tube to the gear bowl or the steering column housing, and now thats where I'm stuck. Hopefully you'll be able to tighten those 4 bolts inside the housing and be done with it, good luck. Anyone else have advice?
