Unable to put Jeep Liberty in gear. The shifter moves however it moves way to easily. I've removed the center console, did a visual inspection, and nothing looks out of the ordinary. Where should I start with trying to get this Jeep into gear?

Have you checked the shift linkage at the transmission to make sure it is moving with the shifter?

Make sure the shift cable is attached to the transmission shift lever.

If the linkage does not move when the shifter is moved, the cable may be broken and need replacement.

SOURCE: replace gear shifter bulb center console

ok, this is a little tricky, open the cubby hole/ arm rest, lift up the little mat in the bottom (if you still have it) there will be two bolts under there, take them out, then, where the piece that you just worked on meets the area where the gear shift is, there will be a screw on each side, take both out, set the e-brake, and slide the cubby console off the e brake, then if you look down in the hole, you will see a small 2-wire harness that you have to twist out, thats where the light is, Hope this helps! 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport. Shifting issue on it?

There are some ideas in the videos, but the first thing to do would be to check for DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes). Is the check engine light on?

My 2005 Jeep Liberty gear shift move back and forward it won't catch what can I do to fix this

hat the issue is with the gear shifter mechanism or the linkages that connect the shifter to the transmission. Here are some steps you can try:
  1. Check the shifter cable: Make sure that the shifter cable is connected properly and that there are no kinks or frays in the cable.
  2. Inspect the linkage: Take a look at the linkages that connect the shifter to the transmission and make sure they are properly attached and not damaged.
  3. Lubricate the mechanism: Apply some lubricant to the shifter mechanism to see if this helps.
If these steps do not solve the issue, it may be best to have a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the problem.
The issue you are facing with your 2005 Jeep Liberty is likely due to a problem with the shifter cable or the gear selector mechanism. It's recommended that you have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair the problem as it may require disassembling the shifter and selector mechanism. If the problem is a broken shifter cable, it will need to be replaced. If it is a problem with the selector mechanism, it may need to be cleaned, lubricated, or repaired.

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. The accordion type plastic housing that moves with the gear shift is broke. What is that part called, and how do I replace it?

I assume you mean the pieces that slide along with your automatic transmission's shifter? Those are called blinds, they're part of your shifter bezel.

To replace your bezel, you have to remove your center console. It's only nine screws. Here's a good writeup on the process: http://www.wjjeeps.com/console.htm

Not shifting properly

This problem could be related to bad cables or the linkage assembly.Remove the center console and get down to the shifter where you can visually see the cables, and where the cables attach to the shifter. The cables should be hooked up at the transmission, but removed from the shifter. One cable is the neutral gate position, and the other is the actual gear selector cable.Manually operate the cables and see if the gears will engage using the cables. If the cables work, you have narrowed it down to the shifter itself. If the cables don't work and gears can't be engaged using the cables, then the cables are bad. Also look over the shifter assembly visually, look for cracks or broken metal while shifting it through the gears.--------- Check it.Thanks.

Transmission is stuck in gear drive. The transmission lever no matter what gear you put it, is still in drive.

block the wheels and look under the jeep on the side of the transmission where the link is while someone plays with the shifter. does the cable and mechanism seem to move ? if not, the shifter cable is probably broken and will have to be changed. if it moves, your problem lies in the transmission.

All of a sudden just now, when I started my jeep, it is an automatic, when I tried to move it into 2nd gear, it just glided all up and down on the gear shift! It never went into any gear, just moved up...

it sounds like the shifter linkage has broken. Its not tough to fix your self if you are mechanicaly inclined. Some times you get lucky and its just a pin. Remove the console around the shifter and inspect everything if not in the shifter then get under there and inspect.

Shifter physically won't move into reverse position

To isolate the problem as either an internal transmission problem,or external to the transmission,(shifter or cable malfunction),the shifter cables should be disconnected from the transmission. On the transmission are two levers,if you have a 5 speed trans. One is the neutral gate lever, and the other is actual gear shift lever.Manipulating the levers manually, see if the transmission will engage into Reverse gear.If the transmission engages into Reverse gear, then the problem is either in the shifter mechanism itself,or the shift cables. If the transmission will not engage into Reverse gear, then the problem is either an internal problem,or possibly a switch seized up,like the reverse gear indicator switch. At this point,i would have an assistant sit in the car, engine off,and run through all the gear selections with the shifter, while watching and looking for a cable not operating to its full stroke.Take the console apart to access the shifter mechanism and visually inspect the assembly.Disconnect the cables and operate them manually, one at a time, while an assistant watches them underhood.Visually inspect the shifter and it's mechanism for a broken, cracked,or damaged component. At this point, the problem should be identified and repaired as either cable or shifter malfunction.
