It is the switch at the top of the brake pedal. most cars it twist to disengage and can be easily pry open. If the contacts have burn spots, remove them carefully and clean with a piece of sand paper close and reinstall it. You can possibly use it for another several years.
If you brake lights stay on and the cruise control doesn't work then I would be looking at the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal as if there is power passing through it then it cuts out the cruise control. The same as if you put your foot on the brake cuts out the cruise control. The hatch button will be another problem like a fuse or broken cable or failed latch solenoid. As to the rear middle brake light try checking the bulb first.
Testimonial: "We changed the brake light switch already and whatever is going on drains the battery and I have to jump start it."
thanks Bill, the brake light switch has already been replaced and whatever is going on causes the car to have to be jumped in order to start it. I had the battery tested but thats not it either. Also the hatch will open if I use the release on my security key chain. I'm not sure if this info helps determine the problem but I hope I can find an answer.
Thanks for the help, the car is now fixed, all middle brake light bulbs replaced (there were 5) and a new battery. The car starts right up now and the brake lights no longer come on in drive. Bill your help was much appreciated and I hope this helps someone else in the future :)

Had this problem myself. Try replacing your brake light switch, they are not real expensive and can be changed in a matter of mineuts. It is located by following your brake pedal all the way up to the top, when you get there , there id a switch that when you push down on the brake it releases the button to put you brake lights on and when you take your foot off the brake itallows the switch to go back.

I have the same problem with my 03 Focus hatchback! Someone stoppedme yesterday to tell me that they looked like they were always on when i was driving but when i was in "Park" they worked... This particular driver was also driving a focus hatchback and asked me if my Cruise Control was working.. It actually was not and he told me the same thing happened with his focus. He said it was a wire attached to the back brake lights that had broken. I have not yet gotten it fixed. has anyone else had this problem?
SOURCE: Cruise control and rear hatch
yes. The CC uses the signal from the brake light switch to operate. Rear hatch? sounds unrelated unless you are referring to the 3rd brake light. Depending on your car there may be a rubber or plastic button the brake arm rests against when not being pressed. This may have broken or fallen off.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
First you may check on the ground wire. Black in color, it may be loosen and needs to be secured for the brake light to operate normally.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
