This usually happens when the transmission fluid gets hot.

Transmission fluid gets hot when there's not much of it.

Check your transmission fluid levels.

If it's low, you can fill it by pouring fluid down the testing hose. Just make sure to get a funnel.

Transmission automatic

is the OD lamp acting up> is the CEL lamp on, driving???????????

old car, most 96 have long since , given up the ghost.

stops in 1st gear?

some times. (common) the oil (ATF) gets hot (normal) and when hot

it is more thin, and when more thin, finds leaks inside better.

what can happen is pump pressure is marginal and hot fails.

and pressure inside drops and transmission fails to shift.

did you run the scanner to see if THE A/T has thrown DTC codes?

why not get the A/.T a full service, most are never done.

and will be full of junk inside due to zero service. (this full flush is good on cars every 50k, but if ignored for 300k , the flush makes it worse)

but do pull the codes first.

the FSM covers that.

It has full on car testing , read that too.

Does the A/T fail (hot) and stick in1st gear

(the stall test in the FSM pass?>)?

the stall test, is with all brakes hard set.

and you do a hot engine/trans , WOT, for 5 seconds max. (RTM)

RTM means read the manual, its documented 100% this.

WOT is wide open throttle (short time)

then you look at RPM (engine)

and see how high it goes, if too low, the engine is weak

if too high the transmission is slipping and will now burn up if driven

do not ignore slipping or doom happens faster.

the next test is the on car,. tranny test ports for pump pressure.

that too, is in the FSM for first checks)

The A/T is complex. read the book, or get help

1999 honda civic transmission slow when hot replaced everything but transmission and works great till it gets hot about 5 miles

hot oil is thinner, ATF. cold works better, CLASSIC case.
my guess ,si the mean A;T pump pressure falls like a rock hot.
in all cars, FSM
all cars have these pages. that are on car tests for A;/T
(sure check all fuse...all time ,every time)
1: stall tests. on car, parked, running, test. brakes set hard.
yours i bet will fails this hot.
2; pump tests. (pressure guage)
id bet yours fails test 2 too.
and means...... its bad. the box is bad.
RTM read the FSM. do the simple test, and bingo.

the stall test takes no tools (if you have a tachometer) if not get one.

My tranmission was shifting hard and trying to run hot so i changed filter and fluid.now its not doin that it slipping and stalls at low rpm's.is that my torque converter or sensors bad?

You may need the transmission rebuilt, once it starts to slip that is the end in mist cases. Have a local transmission repair shop confirm my guess on this

My 1988 Nissan Pathfinder is driving fine and then stalls. The transmission gauge says hot but the transmission is not hot.

The temperature sensor would be measuring internal heat. If the transmission fluid reaches critical temperature the sensor would set of the warning.. I don't know if that has anything to do with the stalling. You need to have the computer scanned to find out what is causing the stalling problem.

Stalls when hot

Try a crank sensor. It's just above the oil pan center between the engine and transmission. Look and see if the old one is cracked.

Transmission stalls when shifting

Sounds like the tranny needs to be rebuilt. Like the pressure plate and the disk are worn
