I have a 97 vw jetta gls. The turn signals and flashers just quit at the same time. The lever that controls the turn signals also controls the bright lights. The bright lights still come on using this same lever but no turn signals... Is it the turn signal relay switch. If so, where is it located?

SOURCE: I need to know correct location for relays as they are mounted above fuses. 98 jetta gls

Hi - I don't know the answer off hand but there is just a chance you could do a Sherlock Holmes job yourself, because many of the relays have unique pin layouts and cannot fit into the wrong place. The numbers may be misleading - on my Sharan some of the relays have numbers which are sideways or upside down when correctly installed! If you find that one relay will go into more than one socket, or more than one relay will go into one socket then you will need further help, but if there is, say, a five pin relay and only one five pin socket, it's got to be right, hasn't it?
If these suggestions do help you solve the problem, please give my reply a rating to help others judge my knowledge / guessing skills. If they do not, please add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further. Cheers, D

A Clymer Guide or similar manual will show you the wiring schematic. Should be available online, or in your library.

SOURCE: Automobile electrical problem

I hate to say it but GM "W" bodies of that time period ( Regal, Cutlass Supreme, Lumina, and Grand Prix) are notorious for turn signal problems. I'm a machanic and also have owned 3 W body vehicles. The pivot bushing in the switch wears prematurely and in turn causes the copper contacts to barely touch each other. If the contacts are dirty, there is resistance. Where there is resistance, there is heat, hence the smoke. It's just a poor design. What I do instead of replacing the switch requires some time and some surgical skill but it always works for me. At the pivot end of the switch, I remove the screw and remove the metal tube insert. I wrap the metal with electrical tape to take up the slack from the wear then grease the heck out of it. At the contact end I attach a piece of sheet metal to the bottom of the movable part of the switch so it sits underneath the non-moveable part making it so the moveable part can't lift up and lose contact. That's just a vague description but if you want a detailed one let me know and I'll write one. I did it to my '89 Regal 4 yrs. ago and to my wife's Grand Prix 1 yr. ago and they both still work great. Just a design flaw in the switch. Sometimes you have to pick up wher the car companies left off! beest921

SOURCE: How do you replace the

I can not tell you how much you should get a steering column place to repair that. Trust me, you don't want to go there. That is one thing is not worth doing yourself.

97 VW Jetta GLS, manual transmission. The speedometer stopped working & the fuel gauge is jumping around.

Hi Ken You seem to have two faults with your vehicle. One will be a speed sensor and the other possibly a bad connection. Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and pin point the problems (which the scan will do) and then sort them out. Regards John

The turn signals do not work when you use the signal switch. However, the emergency flashers do work. The fuse was checked and is good. Everything else on the signal stem works: the cruise control,...

if the fuse is good and all the lights work(if you checked them when the hazards were working)then you need a signal flasher, the signals have a separate flasher and it looks like the hazard flasher.if you turn on the hazards and look for it under the dash then you know what the signal flasher looks like,it is located on the fuse panel of in that area.

I lost my key to my 97 jetta gls. Dealer says vw doesn't keep key codes for older models.

I have a 1997 Cadillac Deville and have trouble getting some parts for it. Was told by dealer that anything over 10 years old is this way.

Signal lights don't work, I've changed the fuses..1996vw jetta

Most likely a bad turn signal flasher . if the flasher is proper then check out if the socket where you insert the bulb is getting proper voltage.if not change that socket.

Turn signal don't work or the flashers?

If you still have flasher problems, I read on Google to spray WD-40 down in and around the hazzard flasher button, then press it up and down several times...and BINGO...all flashers and signals worked again....just had some dirt and dust in the wiring....
