You will just have to catch it for diagnosing when it is acting up. That is when to check for spark (for an ignition problem) and for fuel pressure (for a bad pump or pump wiring circuit problem).
Does the dash lights get dim when it dies out ?

Check all grounds running from all electrical, If there is not a good contact this problem will occur, when you locate the ground surface take sandpaper or even a knife and scrape or sand the connector and the ground surface then reconnect it, It should return to normal if not then it could be a solenoid possibly but not sure

replace the distributor oil is leaking into the electronics of the distributor and shorting out pull cap back off and look and see if oil is leaking out

First, change the fuel filter, and make sure the lines are good. Check the intake manifold bolts for tighness, check all vacuum lines. Best to have it running, wiggle them around and listen for a hiss. Lastly, change idle control sensor, if the other suggestions don't make a difference.

it'll either be your ignition system (spark plugs, distributor cap, etc) or more likely your fuel system (most likely your fuel pump or your fuel filter)
